£121.00Windy City Holiday - Gary P. Gilroy
Windy City Holiday was composed specifically for the Fresno State Wind Orchestra for their performance at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Illinois for the Percy Grainger Wind Band Festival. The composer, Gary P. Gilroy, serves as the Director of Bands at Fresno State and conductor of the universitys premiere wind band, the Fresno State Wind Orchestra and Dr. Gilroy wrote this work in honor of the students who raised the funding needed to be a part of the Festival. The group took a five-day trip to Chicago and as such, had a "Holiday" of sorts in the famous Windy City with Dr. Gilroy on his first major trip as the Director of Bands with the Wind Orchestra. The work is one of the more challenging compositions Gilroy has written in some time and he wanted to compose an exciting and energetic opener for this historic concert. He also wanted the work to represent the fun and excitement his students would be exposed to in Chicago so it was important that the opener be playful and light at times.

Along with the movement to Impressionism during the latter part of the 19th century, the French were caught up in the popularity of American ragtime and early jazz. Erik Saties piano piece Le Piccadilly, composed in 1903, was his own tribute to the syncopated dancing rhythms and lively melodies that made the genre so appealing. This fine realization brings the best of the genre and the eccentricities of the composer to the capable wind ensemble. A concert treat.

The Hearts Reflection was originally written for eight-part mixed chorus as a sort of tone poem to Proverbs 27:19: "Just as the water reflects the face, so one human heart reflects another." Broad and symphonic in nature, it reflects these words freely, exploring the emotions behind each. From the original program notes: "It serves as a poignant reminder of the spiritual kinship that exists within humanity and the necessity that we must see ourselves in the hearts of others." The variety of textures and instrumental colors enhance the tonal spectrum of the original and bring out the expressive nature of the work.

£121.00Ragtime Nightingale - Joseph Lamb
Joseph F. Lamb is rightfully regarded as one of the "Big Three" composers of classic ragtime music, the other two being Scott Joplin and James Scott. Lamb, who was of Irish descent, was the only non-African American of the group. Unlike Joplin and Scott, Joseph Lambs fame outlived the era of classic ragtime and he, along with Eubie Blake, were the only personalities from the original ragtime era that took part in the ragtime revival in the late 1950s. Ragtime Nightingale is a "heavy rag" and displays Lambs individual style, delightful syncopations. and jaunty spirit that appear so pleasingly throughout the piece. A new dimension to concert programming.

This work was commissioned by the Baptist Preparatory School Band of Little Rock, Arkansas, Mrs. Lindsey Leggitt, director. The work is dedicated to that school and the 2016 graduating class of the Baptist Prep Band Program. This musical work for concert band is based on the hymn Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus with some additional material created for transitions and unity. The piece is written in the style of classic hymn song settings for band and should be played with careful attention to expression and balance.
