Bahumba (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sciaino, Peter

Bahumba is a nonsense word but a no-nonsense selection for concert band. The word stems from a sound composer Peter Sciaino heard coming from an idling car. The engine, clearly having issues, had an "uneven" gate or pulse. He mindlessly heard the word "Bahumba" within the sounds emerging from the struggling motor. Just like an engine, an ensemble can attain a smooth groove even if "uneven" in terms of pulse. While the percussionists are often asked to provide this groove under the melodic lines, they ultimately break out with a feature that essentially places a percussion ensemble within the context of a concert band piece. Heartbeat of a City (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.

A city is founded, it has a heart that beats. But visible achievements such as buildings and infrastructure merely bear witness to what its true heart is made of, the people who have lived, and still live, in the city. The pulse of the city, brought to life by its heartbeat, changes over time. Who hasn't seen those time-lapse images showing twinkling lines of car lights as people make their way to work, while others stand at traffic lights, only moving as if at the push of a button? These are like life flowing in the veins, driven by a strong heart. Leonardo da Vinci had already imagined the rivers as the blood vessels of the Earth. In any city, though, it's not the rivers but the movement and activities of the people who live there. The heart doesn't always beat steadily, however, but its rhythm can be influenced by joy, fear, and many other things. Every city has its own pulse. This is also true of the university city of Marburg, where people from over 100 nations now live together in a cosmopolitan and tolerant community. This work describes the city from its founding in 1222, and the charity of Saint Elizabeth, all the way to the present day.Duration: 9.15

    Break Through

Break Through is a musical representation of one's struggle to pass through a barrier or move beyond an obstacle, either a literal breakthrough or a metaphorical achievement. The composition centers around the key of G minor to achieve a sense of dark, resonant emotion. The percussion is the heartbeat and pulse for the introduction of the piece, while the bass drum and gong rolls create a lugubrious timbre. Melodies and counter-melodies weave in and out of the musical texture. A struggle ensues leading up to the climax, following which there is a resolution to the relative major key of B-flat. Finally, there is a transition to a recapitulation of the opening theme, moving towards a contemplative ending in G minor.
