Inferno in the Lost Pines - Larry Clark
Larry Clark does it again, with a bold new piece for young students, using only the first 6 notes of the Bb scale and two eighth notes on the same pitch as the most difficult rhythm. The piece is meant to depict the struggle that firefighters go through when trying to tame an out of control brush fire. The piece goes right into the main theme without introduction and then moves into a more subdued second theme, in contrast. After a short development of the themes with interplay between the winds and percussion, the piece builds to a strong coda: a great way to showcase your beginning band at a concert or festival.

Fanfare and Patrol - Carl Strommen
Beginning with a Copland-esque brass and percussion fanfare, this piece leads to an all-out lush harmonic flourish, subsiding into a military-style patrol march, with the sounds of echoes, evoking troops marching over the hill and then moving away. Fanfare and Patrol finishes off with the climactic return of the main fanfare.

Quirks - Brant Karrick
Quirks'a word defined as a sudden sharp turn or an unpredictable peculiarity of behavior or action'demonstrates the capricious nature of the title in its musical character. The music vacillates between fast and slow, happy and sad, extroverted and introverted, and just never goes where you expect. There is plenty of interplay between winds and percussion as the four and three notes of the main motive are tossed about the many instrumental colors. This is a tour-de-force, destined to become a band standard for more advanced bands. You must give this a careful listen.

Lanigan's Ball - Ed Kiefer

Ed Kiefer starts with a solo clarinet on the jig Lanigan's Ball that builds and builds to a dramatic presentation of the folk song, before leading a section of repose based on the song Binnorie. The percussion is highlighted in a build-up to the climax where the tunes are combined for a dramatic conclusion.

This is one of Larry Clark's most successful and performed pieces. It is a standard overture with a glorious slower B section, and is already on the required music lists for many states (including Texas and Florida). Now it can be performed by a band with instrumentation problems in this new flexible scoring edition. As few as five players and percussion can perform a full-sounding version of this wonderful work. To prove it, we recorded an excerpted version of the piece where we did just that.
