Symphonic Overture is a contemporary-sounding overture of medium difficulty so scored that it can be performed with equal success by large and small groups alike. Employing the familiar three-part form (A-B-A), the opening section has a theme which is robust in character and with considerable rhythmic interest. The second theme, slow and expressive in character is a free form based on an opening idea introduced by the first flute. At the return of the first section, the first theme is treated as a fugue subject building to great heights as all four entrances are achieved. As the exposition concludes, the contrapuntal texture gives way to a homophonic quality which closes the piece.The coda, as is characteristic, utilizes material from the first theme.

Bandanna Overture - Daron Aric Hagen
Bandanna is the extraordinary opera commissioned by a consortium of 79 members of the College Band Directors National Association, and premiered at the CBDNA convention in Austin, TX on February 28, 1999. This overture is not a part of the opera, but an independent concert work created by the composer for concert performance. A brilliantly scored composition, that has already been adopted by the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List, Overture to "Bandanna" features many musical ideas from the opera including the wonderful melody that brings audiences to their feet. The idea for Sdwind Overture arose during dinner with the conductor Werner Buchmann and a few members of his band. Ferrer Ferran accepted the commission to write the work and asked Mr. Buchmann jokingly to sing him a motif offive notes that would serve as the leitmotif of the composition. In 1964 I met the American composer, conductor, pianist and educationist Aaron Copland (1900-1990) who was in The Netherlands during an European concert tour. I keep most pleasant memories of his performances and of our conversations. In memory of that great man I made in 1995 a new version of a small composition that I had written in 1970 for the Silver Jubilee of the Metropole Orchestra (of the Dutch Radio Institution) and that was called 'An Indoor Overture'. This short work is a kind of answer to Copland's 'An Outdoor Overture' (1938) in which also light and serious music are harmoniously mixed.Willem Strietman

This piece is written in the form of an overture (A-B-A). The beginning features a prominent, dynamic theme, which determines the character of the whole piece. This theme is repeated in every part of the composition; in the slow middle movement it appears in lyrical phrases, supported by broad harmonies, which feature in an unexpected manner. Dynamic Overture ends with an adapted repeat of the first movement, finishing in a flashing coda.
