Adventure Overture - Timothy Loest
This three-part overture is extremely easy to put together and is an ideal transition from beginning band literature. Special attention is given to low brass parts, insuring that they are not too difficult. A lush lyrical section provides for some more interesting harmonies, yet is very approachable by bands at all levels. Use this section to work on balance and musicality with your ensemble. Commissioned to commemorate its 20th anniversary season, this work was written for the Nebraska Wind Symphony, Omahas community band, in 1997. It is in traditional overture form, with a bold introductory theme in the horns answered by the trumpets. The material that follows presents the main theme in solo voices followed by the entire band. Contrasting material follows, leading to a recapitulation and eventually to a jubilant coda. While not intentionally programmatic, the title of the work does reflect the bands geographic location.

The 1984 effort by the well-known composer is currently found on several state lists. Three contrasting sections make up the Overture, beginning with a brisk rhythmic introduction which is followed by a slow melodic theme featuring flutes. The piece combines a majestic brass fanfare with musically expressive themes for a real celebration in sound. Effective scoring allows all sections to contribute important lyric material before returning to the allegro brillante tempo and another rousing fanfare to bring the work to a dramatic conclusion.

Franz von Suppe was born Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo Cavaliere di Suppe-Demielli on April 18, 1819. His father and grandfather were both civil servants, and he was distant relative of Gaetano Donizetti. He displayed his talent at an early age when he began to compose music as a young boy, but despite this he received no encouragement from his father to pursue a career in music. He went on to compose many operas, most of which remain relatively obscure; however, the overtures to "Poet and Peasant" and "Light Cavalry" are well known and have been quite popular in transcriptions for concert band and widely used in movies and cartoons. Highly exuberant and spirited, Vienna Jubilation Overture contains all the thrilling elements that are evident in all of von Suppes remarkable overtures.

This Overture in C, composed by one of Gossec's outstanding pupils Catel, is a most representative original band composition of the French Revolution era. It was premiered by the National Guard Band at the Paris 'Thtre Feydeau' on november 29, 1793. The concert was meant as a demonstration of the high musical qualities of the newly created National Music Institute.
