We still do not understand why the excellent Russian composer Georgi Salnikov did not yet completely break through as band music composer in Western Europe. His exquisite music for symphonic band boasts all ingredients to appeal to large audiences. Molenaar Edition already published several of his compositions, such as Burleske, Children's Suite, Poem for French Horn and Symphonic Band and Russischer Reigen. The merry Overture for a Summer Afternoon opus 51 is a most welcome addition to this specific original repertoire. As always, Salnikov's signature guarantees a composition of high quality.

Eric Swiggers (Deurne, 1968) is currently conductor of the symphonic band 'Harmonie St Caecilia' of Lieshout and the fanfare band 'De Notenkrakers' (The Nutcrackers) of Vorstenbosch. He has composed quite some interesting pieces for wind band in the lighter vein. This sparkling overture was commissioned by the 'St Caecilia' band that Swiggers is conducting, for its 125th anniversary.

The European Overture is an enthusiastic and amazing opening dedicated to and premiered by Jan Cober and the European Union Youth Wind Orchestra in Luxembourg, 2013. As a clarinetist member of the EUYWO (2009, 2011 and 2013), not only was Prez Garrido fortunate enough to work with maestro Cober and many of the most talented European young musicians but he also made a lot of good friends. The idea of composing an original piece for band, appeared at the birth of the composers daughter. In this piece the brass section takes a leading role with introducing the themes while the woodwinds have the role of enhancing and adding to them with a subtle intervention. The initial fanfare foretells the birth of a new life whereas the choral is a hymn to life. Despite being an overture, where the rhythm is quite precise and vibrant, there is also room for more melodic and intimate moments. At the end, some of the themes heard earlier reappear, thus closing the circle.
