    Night Flight - Bill Calhoun

Bill Calhoun is quickly becoming one of the best composers in this business. He has a way of writing pieces that are exciting, well-scored, interesting and different. Night Flight shows his aggressive side with a piece that starts strong, right out of the gate. The fearless-sounding melody lifts up players and audience, grabs hold of them and takes them on the musical journey of a flight into the night sky. A perfect selection to showcase your developing band at a contest or festival performance.

    The Spirit of an Eagle

This is one of Larry Clark's most successful and performed pieces. It is a standard overture with a glorious slower B section, and is already on the required music lists for many states (including Texas and Florida). Now it can be performed by a band with instrumentation problems in this new flexible scoring edition. As few as five players and percussion can perform a full-sounding version of this wonderful work. To prove it, we recorded an excerpted version of the piece where we did just that.

    The Old Red Mill

As one of the most stunning new pieces in the catalog this year, The Old Red Mill may be Brant Karrick's best work to date. It opens with a lush and beautiful lyrical section before moving into a very creative, lilting up-tempo section. The piece has a down-home feel, but is a wonderful new addition to the literature. It is surely destined to become a standard.

    Freyja's Call - Andrew Duncan

According to Viking mythology, following a battle the bravest souls of the slain would be divided between two Gods, Odin and Freyja. Freyja was the Goddess of Love and War and before going into battle many Viking warriors would pray that they would die bravely so that Freyja would take their soul to join her personal army made up of the souls of the bravest of men.'Freyja's Call' describes one of these, a young Scottish soldier, going into battle as part of the Viking army who occupied parts of Scotland for four centuries. First, a slow theme is heard, Freyja's theme, which is the soldier praying to Freyja to keep a watch on him. Then the drums introduce a new rhythm which announces the beginning of the battle.A Celtic Jig is used to describe the progress of the battle with the jig played quietly at first then gradually louder with more percussion being added until a full ff section signifies the soldier fighting the enemy directly.Suddenly, the music drops back to the quiet Jig theme. The soldier has been slain, but will he be chosen by Frejya? After a short time, Freyja's theme is heard as the brave soldier is taken to Freyja's heavenly army of brave warriors, and the piece then ends in triumph.

    Whirlegigg - Kenneth Hesketh

Whirlegigg is the middle English word for a contraption that continuously spins. A great fascination with many inventors of the medieval period was to develop a perpetual motion machine constantly turning and giving off energy. This idea is particularly apt for this piece. A simple ternary structure gives ample opportunity for both boisterous and reflective material with gyrating accompanimental figures never far away. The machine almost stops near the end, but finally musters one last burst of excitement and energy to bring the work to its close.

    Capriccio - Gustav Holst

Holst composed this short, light-hearted but tuneful work in 1932, while on a visit to the USA, for Nathaniel Shilkret's concert jazz band. He was asked to use a folk tune but invented one of his own. The piece was not performed and remained in manuscript. This version for wind band was arranged by John Boyd with the approval of Imogen Holst.

Illuminate - Wind Band (Andrew Wainwright)

Written for the Chicago Staff Band's tour of England in 2015, this exhilarating work was premiered at The Salvation Army's Boundless International Congress at London's O2 Arena to an audience of 20,000 people. It has since been arranged here for wind band. The piece is structured as a through-composed triptych, weaving together the popularcontemporary worship songs Shine on Us (Michael W. Smith) and Speak, O Lord (Keith and Kristin Getty) with the historic Salvationist anthem The World for God (Evangeline Booth) to explore themes of light, guidance, and mission. The work opens with energy and rhythmic drive, centering on Shine on Us. A stark contrast follows in the meditative middle section. Here, the music explores the contemplative depths of Speak, O Lord, featuring solo horn. The final section introduces a nostalgic and stirring reference to General Evangeline Booth's classic hymn, The World for God. The finale juxtaposes all three themes. As the disparate melodies intertwine and layer upon one another, the music builds to a triumphant climax - a representation of 'illumination' that celebrates a shared faith across generations. Dashing away with the smoothing iron - Ray Steadman-Allen

The composer writes... A lighthearted arrangement of an old folk song. The style is generally bright with a short, slower change of pace in the middle. En route there are a couple of quotations which got into the music almost unbidden: a fragment of one of Mozart's horn concerti and 'A-hunting we will go'. '... a splendid concert piece for advanced tuba players.' WINDS Autumn 2008 Duration: c.3:00 Also available with piano or brass band.

    Smash (CB) - Manuel Renggli

Imagine the hustle and fuss of a big city at night. Countless people who want to escape the rush of their everyday life. The streets appear in the light of the electronic billboards and loud music can be heard from the nightclubs. Music whose rhythm goes directly through the body and puts us in a cheerful mood. In his piece "Smash" Manuel Renggli tries to describe this floating and at the same time somewhat frightening situation. "The beat", the rigid and always constant meter plays a decisive role. A feeling of lightness arises, the worries are taken away. For a short moment one finds itself in a kind of ecstasy.

Les oiseaux dans la charmille (CB) - Jacques Offenbach - Bert Van Thienen

One of the most difficult coloratura arias in the entire operatic repertoire, "Les oiseaux dans la charmille" comes from Offenbach's 'Les contes d'Hoffmann'. The piece is also known as 'The Doll Song' since the character who performs it, Olympia, is a mechanical doll. In the opera, Hoffman recounts how he was charmed by the automaton, co-created by Spalanzani and Copplius. Though anyone could plainly see that Olympia was a machine, Copplius sold Hoffman a pair of magical glasses that tricked him into thinking Olympia was a real woman.
