"Candles in Advent" is a beautiful melody with great lyrics. It was originally written for an Norwegian Advent TV-series in 1985.In this arrangement, the oboe has some solo passages (cue notes in flute). I Have tried to vary the instrumentation without going beyond the beautiful Christmas mood.The harmonization is simple and functional. Let the soloists "speak" with good phrasing and focus also on harmony in the unison melody lines. Good balance and intonation in the accompaniment can make the performance a little gem on the Christmas concert.- Reid Gilje -

Gilroy composed this festive work to commemorate the Twentieth Anniversary of the Lake Sequoia Symphonic Music Camp. It is an energetic work which is meant to evoke the spirit of celebration, the beauty of the area, the music camp, and its teachers. Beginning with a brilliant fast section, this is followed by a more serene, introspective section with lyrical lines and soloistic playing in the oboe, horns, and trumpet. Wh then return to the festive tempo for a rousing finale.

In 1884, a locomotive tossed a spark that stated a fire that reduced the town of Milton, Pennsylvania to ashes. A majestic fanfare depicts the vibrant town with train whistles in the flutes, train bells in the chimes, whirling engines in the brass, and telegraphs in woodwinds and mallets. Growing dissonances depict the fierce firestorm that abruptly dissolves into a solemn oboe solo of the towns sadness, while paper bags and plastic water bottles represent the smoldering fire. The music then turns from sorrow to hope as small sections of the schools alma mater embed the message of hope and optimism before the rousing and triumphant coda.

Released as a charity single in aid of The Queen's Commonwealth Trust, this sublime work was composed by Debbie Wiseman OBE and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II after her death in September 2022. This tender and contemplative piece was played many times during the BBC's live coverage of the ceremonies across ten days of national mourning; and the full three-minute piece was played at the end of the Queen's State funeral, following Kirsty Young's emotional final words, and accompanied by a poignant and beautiful montage of images from the events of the day. The piece is now available for wind bands through this arrangement by Andrew Wainwright, with permission kindly granted by Debbie Wiseman. Inspired by early works for wind band by British composers Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams, this charming concert work is based on an English folk song called As I walked over London Bridge. The arranger Andrew E Lawson writes: 'While I found this folk melody in a set of cello etudes written by Vaughan Williams, it was text that solidified my decision to use this melody, and it is the text that brings some insight into the nature of this folk melody, as well as the nature of the additional original melodies and harmonies throughout the piece.' 'Courte Ouverture' as translated from the French means 'Short Overture'. Written for a medium level ensemble, it commences with a high trill in the piccolo followed by a flourish in the flutes before the main theme is introduced. This primary melody can be heard throughout the selection. It then transitions into an almost hymn-like middle section before an accelerando takes us back to the flute flourish and main theme. This piece uses the music ensemble to its fullest. Memorable melodies and traditional harmonies are spread throughout the instrumentation.
