Fragments of his favorite hymn, Amazing Grace, are used throughout before the final and exhilarating close brings about a sense of joy celebrating the personality and energy he dedicated to the teaching profession.

As the work progresses, it gradually builds until the full ensemble depicts Ragans dynamic personality and joy of life. It then unwinds as it began, as though you are watching your child gradually fall asleep in your arms. An effective, slower piece that will showcase musicianship and musicality through lush lines and beautiful phrases.

Celebration Overture is a work meant to reflect a celebration of life and all of the wonderful and positive events we are fortunate enough to experience. The piece combines a majestic brass fanfare with musically expressive themes for a real celebration in sound. Effective scoring allows all sections to contribute important lyric material before returning to the allegro brillante tempo and another rousing fanfare to bring the work to a dramatic conclusion.

Shady Grove is a folk song that began to be heard in the southern Appalachians around the time of the Civil War. The memorable melody has a distinctively haunting quality that one cant help but be affected by. Many different lyrics exist for the song (some estimate it could be as many as 250), but the central themes are that of longing, love, and friendship. The use of washboard and spoons at one point brings this catchy bluegrass tune to life, helping us connect to this delightful American folk song.

Providing a unique concert experience, this programmatic work depicts the story of what newspapers in 1916 described as "the poison soup plot"! At a Chicago banquet for dignitaries and politicians, a mass murder plot involving poison soup was hatched and nearly successful. However, thanks to a large number of unexpected guests, the dilution of the soup to feed everyone, and a quick thinking doctor with an antidote, tragedy was averted with no loss of life. Musical cues follow the events, and detailed program notes are included with the suggestion of including dancers to help tell the story. Imaginative and entertaining!

Cradle of Liberty
Al Hayes was one of seven pseudonyms used by famous march composer Henry Fillmore. Fillmore became so popular and was so prolific in the early part of the 20th century that he had to resort to pennames as to not compete with himself. This is yet another tuneful, well-written march by Fillmore that has been given new life in this setting by arranger Laurie Lafferty. This is the perfect march for use as a festival warm-up that is of a moderate difficulty.
