This exciting work for concert band is a set of three delightful dances. Opening with a bold fanfare statement, the first dance reveals the melodic material that is the basis for all three movements. The title of this movement, Double Dance, is derived from the second statement of the melody, appearing in doubled rhythmic values. The second movement, Round Dance, the melody is written as a three part round. You could not have a Round Dance without a Square Dance, which is the title of final movement. Lots of fun percussion instruments add interesting timbres throughout. This interesting and clever composition is perfect for contest and festival.

Goin' Home - Antonin Dvorak
Antonin Dvorak first premiered his "New World Symphony" at Carnegie Hall in December of 1893 with the goal to bring American musical sensibility to European classical music. The second movement, labeled Largo, contained the melody that would later be identified as "Goin' Home." This well-crafted adaptation of that beautiful melody for concert band contains all the elements of the original orchestral version that has moved orchestral concert patrons for over a century. It is not entirely sure where the melody originates that forms the basis for Norwegian Overture. Most sources point in the direction of a certain J.H. Nebelong in about 1881. It is also possible that he was the first to note down this traditional melody and put his name to it.The lyrics are by a certain A.H. Brorson and were set to the music at a later date. The original title is "store hvide flok", which means "the big white herd". Several composers have used this theme, including Edvard Grieg and the Danish Carl Nielsen.

The first movement of this work, an Allegretto, begins with a fanfare-like opening. After a number of other melody lines, a reprise of the beginning follows, which ends in a cadenza for the soloist. Movement two, titled Rituel, is characterized by interplay between the soloist and the band within a stately melody. In the final movement, the theme of the first movement's opening returns. Sayonara - Traditional
This traditional melody is known worldwide as a song of farewell. Jan Van der Roost treated it as an anthem in this splendid arrangement. The melody is brought to us in whole or in part by various instruments and is surrounded by logical yet original - sometimes surprising - chords that dare to fluctuate. After a broad tutti, the ensemble begins to die out. The piece ends with an impressive diminuendo of the final chord, almost as if the orchestra itself were saying goodbye.

Artemis - Jan Van der Roost
Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are "concertante" in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.
