Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of "There is a land of pure delight" and is known as the "Father of English Hymnody". Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs, and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World, When I survey the wondrous cross, I sing the Mighty Power of God) "There is a Land of Pure Delight" is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription'). This 14th-century melody was originally collected by Michael Praetorius at the end of the 16th-century. The treatment throughout is very lyrical without overly complex harmonies. The melody is heard three times with brief linking episodes and a short coda. Written in an upbeat Latin rhythmic form, Chips, and Salsa, Too begins with percussion under a nice rhythmic motif in the winds. A tuneful minor melody in the clarinets, well below the break, continues above this Latin groove after the intro. The tubas (and cross-cued for euphoniums and bass clarinets) and flutes have a melody together, and the rest of the band is gradually layered in the mix until everybody is contributing to the mix. Latin rhythms, featured percussion, and lots of nice melodies for the winds makes this a piece your students and audiences will love!
