In the year 1368 a rapacious character takes up residence in the castle of Rijnesteyn at Cothen. He is Johan,bastard son of the Bishop of Utrecht.Round this now so peaceful castle eventful matters are enacted. In part one Johan and Willem Gulik of Guelders set out to do battle against King Charles of France. On their return,in part two, Johan captures two French goldsmiths in Hainault and incarcerates them at Castle Rijnesteyn. Part three is a musical representation of a courtly ballet in medieval style. The final part relates how Jan van Rijnesteyn goes to war against Hendrik van Vianen and Lord of 'Goy,Viscount of Utrecht.Jan loots hispossessions and threathens to conquer all. In het jaar 1368 betrekt een roofzuchtig heerschap het kasteel Reijnestein te Cothen.Het is Johan, de bastaardzoon van de Utrechtse bisschop. Rond dit nu zo vredig gelegen ridderslot hebben zich toen geruchtmakende taferelen afgespeeld. In het eerste deel trekt Johan met Willem Gullik, de hertog van Gelre, ten strijde tegen koning Karel van Frankrijk. De terugreis speelt zich af in het tweede deel. Tijdens deze reis neemt Johan in Henegouwen twee Franse goudsmeden gevangen en sluit ze op in de kerker van slot Rijnesteyn. Deel 3 is de muzikale weergave van een hoofs ballet in middeleeuwse stijl. In het laatste deel wordt verteld hoe Jan van Rijnesteyn in 1396 ten strijde trekt tegen Hendrik van Vianen en de heer van't Goy, burggraaf van Utrecht. Jan plundert diens goederen en dreigt diens bezittingen te veroveren.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of "There is a land of pure delight" and is known as the "Father of English Hymnody". Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs, and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World, When I survey the wondrous cross, I sing the Mighty Power of God) "There is a Land of Pure Delight" is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription'). The Tower was commisioned by the concert band of Auneau (France), for their 190th anniversary. The composer was inspired by a medieval tower standing in the city and decided to transcribe in music the life in the middle ages, the gregorian chant of the monks, a village festival, the building of the tower, step by step, and then the evocation of the battle of Auneau, one of the famous religious battles of the middle ages in France. The work ends with the regained calm, and the monks singing their gregorian chant at the end of the day.

The city of Quart derives its name from the Latin "Ad quartum ab Augusta lapidem", or four Roman miles from Augusta Praetoria, present-day Aosta, along the ancient Roman consular road of the Gauls. The fortress of Quart, whose construction began in 1185, is the main source of inspiration for the composition. The work begins, in fact, as if wrapped in a mysterious, suspended atmosphere, when the fog that envelops the manor suddenly thins out and lets one see the majestic building in all its austerity. A rhythmically exciting episode follows this brief introduction, ideally describing the events that have marked the long history of these places. The music highlights the percussion instruments, which evoke ancient medieval atmospheres in a modern language. The second theme, derived from the previous one, describes instead emotions and feelings of grandeur, beauty, and peace associated with the splendid Valle d'Aosta mountains that surround Quart. A developed melodic idea, supported by wide-ranging harmonies, attempts to musically portray the extraordinary natural beauty of these places. The reprise of the first theme, varied and presented in a lively and energetic movement, guides the final part of the piece: a coda where all the melodic and rhythmic ideas previously exposed are condensed.

The medieval plainchant melody Divinum Mysterium is used as the source material for this piece, as its melodic elements are constantly varied throughout. Beginning in a slow, stately tempo as it might have been heard in a cathedral in the middle ages, the initial setting ultimately gives way to fast, driving rhythms which support more and more variations on the tune. The arch-like form of the plainchants final phrase is mirrored in the brasses three times within the piece, the most dramatic of which occurs near the end as Ancient Hymn Tune Variants reaches its exciting and triumphant conclusion.
