What do the American Joseph Kittinger and the Austrian Felix Baumgartner have in common? They both jumped from over 30km high with a parachute. While Kittinger's attempt on 16 August 1960 was from a height of 'only' 31,333 meters, Felix Baumgartner broke this record on 14 October 2012 with a breath-taking 38,969 meters. In A Flemish Christmas, Jan Hadermann tells the Christmas story by means of four Old Flemish Christmas Songs. Mary is chosen to bring Jesus Christ, the son of God, into the world: Het was een maged uitverkoren ('She was a virgin chosen'). On the occasion of a census, Mary, who is with child, and Joseph, her husband to be, travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where Jesus will be born in a humble stable: Maria die zoude naar Bethlehem gaan (Mary would go to Bethlehem'). O kerstnacht, schoner dan de dagen ('Oh Christmas Night, more beautiful than the days') is a stately chorale that sings the praises of Jesus' birth. Three wise men from the East, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, follow a bright star in the sky, which leads them to Bethlehem. There, they worship the new-born King, and offer him gold, frankincense and myrrh: Wij komen van Oosten (We've come from the East'). It opens with a short introduction utilising the opening notes of the melody, proceeding to its first full statement in the upper woodwinds. The second presentation features the trumpets and xylophone followed by a statement in the bass instruments while the melody "Long, Long Ago" appears in the upper voices. A contrasting legato section follows, succeeded by a more rhythmic statement in woodwinds and trumpets. The melody then appears in the alto saxophones with a contrasting idea in upper woodwinds. A marcato statement of the melody appears as a three-bar phrase with a staccato accompaniment. The final section utilises the style of the opening measures and is expanded to bring the work to a final climactic conclusion.Duration: 2.30

He remained positive throughout the many months of treatments and had strong hopes of being cured. He was a vivacious boy who loved sports, the outdoors, and playing the trumpet in band. He was also an excellent student. He was looking forward to joining his high school band with his older sister, Beth, and his friends. However, the cancer continued to spread and at the age of 14, Zach passed away.
