This is interrupted by a return to the opening mood, with only a brief respite in the form of a chorale for clarinet choir and harp. The theme tries to return once more in a rousing, somewhat cinematic version, but again the sense of foreboding overtakes it. An unsettling march-like section follows before the theme returns in its most lyrical and gentle guise, introduced by solos in the woodwind section. Eventually, a maestoso statement which erupts into a presto coda, ends the journey in a triumphant, more optimistic blaze of sound.Duration: 10.00

The Eagle's Quest was commissioned by Brevik Musikkorps (Norway) to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Cort Adeler, a renowned Norwegian-Dutch sailor who was born in the town of Brevik in 1622. His Dutch name Adelaer means 'eagle'. This work celebrates his life but is not programmatic, simply reflecting Brevik's pride in one of its most famous sons. Towards the end of the piece there is a brief quotation from the town song, Brevikssangen, which is a fitting and captivating conclusion.
