Today, building walls remains an issue, often under the pretext of 'protection' against intruders.This idea inspired Otto M. Schwarz to write a piece about the Roman limes between Germania and Rhaetia. From around 150 to 260 AD the wall faced numerous attacks. This programmatic work describes the events as they happened a long time ago, and addresses hope that these events belong to the past forever. Encore! was commissioned by Ishikawa Prefecture Band Association to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2010. The commissioning request was that the piece be fun and appropriate as an encore. I made it simple and enjoyable for everyone.The only thing I added was an appealing introduction so each entering section might feel the importance of their instrument. That's why there is a specified appearance order involving standing. It goes from 1) clarinets, 2) piccolo, flute, horn, oboe and bassoon, 3) percussion, 4) euphonium, tuba and double bass, 5) trombone, 6) saxophone to 7) trumpet. Lastly, all sections stand up together and greet the audience. Technically, it's a medium grade level. There are substitutions for bands lacking oboe, bassoon or double bass.The title was selecting hoping for a fun, grand finale. It also means "more" and "again." My hope is for performers and audience to enjoy music, and for Ishikawa Prefecture Band Association to nourish its band movements and activities. I could not ask for more if people come to love music even more by experiencing this work.(Yo Goto)

Though somewhat dark and dramatic in character, A Million Suns at Midnight is ultimately a hopeful, optimistic work, evoking the struggles of humanity to grow, achieve, and evolve, finally overcoming our fear (and its most common manifestation: violence) to transcend our physical and mental boundaries. Individuals now possess an unprecedented technological capability for both creation and destruction, and we must ensure that the million suns at midnight are not those of fiery destruction, but of bright hope. A Million Suns at Midnight is an appropriate and dramatic concert closer, and is constructed so as to require minimal rehearsal time with the full ensemble, allowing each section to work on their parts separately and assemble the whole quickly and confidently. This has become a Christmas song that has its roots in a love duet between the young Fleksnes and classmate Victoria. The class will be competing with a duet in a song competition. The text gives hope of love and links it to Christmas traditions. "A Dream of Christmas, About Love" is the first line of the text. "The Young Fleksnes" runned as advent calender on TV Norge in 2010. This arrangement feature an Alto Saxophone player and a euphonium / baritone / trombone player. If you should choose to use the soloist parts from the Brass band version for Flugelhorn and Euphonium, please use both parts, because some of the phrases has been changed. Please be aware of thedynamics between soloists and accompaniment. Adjust the dynamics according to the musicians in the ensemble.
