In 1880, Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies, Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band, which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert.

In the summer of 1990, Kumiko Tanaka travelled around Europe and whilst in Spain she was most impressed by the places in the Andalusian region, such as Cordoba, Granada and Malaga. Giacomo da Lentini was a 13th century Italian poet who was a notary at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II and is said to have invented the sonnet. Lentini's Ballad is based on the famous poem 'Amor un desio che ven da core' (Love is a desire that comes from the heart). It sounds great as an instrumental work, but there is also an option for a vocal version using the Italian lyrics of the poem, making the arrangement even more special!

An Olympic Celebration - Robert Buckley
An Olympic Celebration is a tribute to the pursuit of excellence and the triumph of the human spirit. This piece was commissioned by The West Vancouver Youth Band for the build up to the 2010 Winter Olympics. The initial "festive fanfare", based on open fifths moving in contrary motion, brings the athletes out into the arena. This leads to the "parade of the athletes" theme. Then comes the establishment of the "heroic theme" in the woodwinds and horns - moving through different sections - until the transition, with an alto saxophone solo and an oboe solo, leading into the "flashback" section. Here we go into the minds of the athletes and the internal and physical struggles thathave brought them to this place. The melody is epic; rich in feeling and full of heart. This moves through various moods until the introduction of the "challenge" theme; a theme stated by the horns and trombones, which passes through the different sections of the band. A restatement of the "flashback" theme, this time triumphant, takes us to a final fanfare of celebration and jubilation.

It was certainly revolutionary for its time, with a script reflecting contemporary society and music which integrated fusions of many new styles, including jazz. The timeless music of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story has been woven together in this exceptional medley of songs, arranged for concert band by Jay Bocook. The songs include: Maria; Tonight; One Hand, One Heart; Cool; and Somewhere. This music is equivalent to grade 3 standard. Both the score and complete set parts are included.
