From the composer: Nature's Way for intermediate level band was commissioned by BandQuest, a project initiated by the American Composers Forum. Their mission is for major composers of national reputation to write works of high quality that take into consideration the (still comparatively limited) levels of musical development--both technical and conceptual--typical of such ensembles. I eagerly accepted the commission and the challenges implied thereby--that is, to reign in my creative imagination to some extent and limit the technical/conceptual demands to a more moderate level than is to be found in my previous compositions for band. Nonetheless, since the process of rehearsing, studying and performing a work created specifically for the school student market is--and must be, in my view--primarily educational, it was very clear to me that my work would (and should) challenge the players at least to their top levels, and even a little beyond that. Thus Nature's Way in no way represents a compromise of my personal style, nor my long held concepts of form, continuity, texture, and instrumentation. I have known for a long time that young, inquisitive minds are eager to learn from new experiences, from previously never encountered challenges, that is to say, to be pushed--gently--to rise above their present levels of achievement. That's what education is all about. BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. This is a tune by Sigrid Moldestad (b. 1972), a Norwegian folk artist. She has based it on a warm and beautiful poem by Danish author Tove Ditlefsen. A text for and about love. Sigrid Moldestad won the "Spellemannsprisen" (the Norwegian equivalent to Grammy) in 2005 as a part of the group Gamaltnymalt. She won the price two years later, this time as solo artist for the record album Taus. Both times in the Folk Music category. So Take My Heart was released in 2012 as a part of the album Himlen har sove bort mrkret.

"Italy is truly a magical land that has touched my heart beyond measure." These are the words describing the feelings that accompanied the various visits of the American conductor Wesley Broadnax in our country. Italian Impressions, a composition dedicated to Broadnax, portrays these feelings in three main sections that develop without interruption throughout the piece. The first section, "Magic Land," describes a trip to Rome and is a tribute to the splendor and magic of some of the venues in this city. Rich in historical and cultural significance, these places are moving because of their surprising architecture and artistic genius. The second part, "The Huge Castle," depicts his visit in the Umbrian Region. It is a reflective and suspended immersion in music that describes landscapes characterized by ancient houses, churches, courtyards, and squares. "Assisi," says Wesley, "is the city that glitters in the night sky, comparable to a huge castle!" The third part, "Medieval Ballad," is a reference to the city of Siena and Tuscany more generally. The main theme of this movement recalls medieval atmospheres and is based on the fourteenth-century ballad "Ecco la primavera" by Francesco Landino. The original material is presented, elaborated, and juxtaposed with new thematic motives, which lead to an energetic conclusion of the piece.

The incommunicability between different cultures and worlds and the confusion that this generates lie at the heart of this work: the fanfare-like themes that characterise the introduction, together with the "Arabian" melodies of the Presto, represent these differences. The bare theme of the Andante, while offering a glimpse of hope, also describes the impossibility of a meeting and the pain this situation causes. The empty fifth and dissonance of the minor second are elements that feature throughout this work. In the Coda, moreover, all these ideas reappear "kaleidoscopically", amidst a convulsive and excitingly chaotic atmosphere.

London is one of my favorite cities in the world, and in 2016 I was invited there to serve as an adjudicator for the London New Year's Day Parade and Gala Concerts. While I was there, I was fortunate to meet and spend time with The Lord Mayor of Westminster Councillor Steve Summers. While his title sounds formidable and intimidating, I found Steve to one of the nicest, most easygoing people I've ever met. And boy, does he love London! He was fond of saying that he had "the best job in the greatest city in the world." He spoke passionately about London and his favorite places in the city, and his enthusiasm was contagious. Some of his favorite places became some of my favorite places, and the inspiration for this piece. I hope that this work not only conveys the beauty and history of these iconic places, but Steve's deep and abiding love for them as well. I. Tower Bridge - The Tower Bridge was built over 120 years ago to ease road traffic while maintaining river access to the busy Pool of London docks. Its giant moveable roadways lift up for passing ships, making it a true engineering marvel. It is also one of the most iconic sites in London, and was used to display the Olympic Rings during the 2012 Olympics. II. St. Paul's (The Whispering Gallery) - The history of St. Paul's Cathedral goes back well over a thousand years, but construction on the current St. Paul's began in 1669 after a fire destroyed the earlier structure. The dome of St. Paul's Cathedral is a whispering gallery; you can whisper against the wall on the inside of the dome and it can be clearly heard on the other side of the dome over 100 ft. away. Imagine the secrets that have passed there... III. Trafalgar Square - The name commemorates the 1805 naval Battle of Trafalgar and is marked by Nelson's Column, a monument to Admiral Horatio Nelson, the hero of the Battle of Trafalgar. It is the heart of London; full of life and constant energy and home to iconic buildings including the National Gallery, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Canada House and South Africa House. Londoners say that all roads in London lead to Trafalgar Square.
