£115.00NAME PERPETUAL, A (Concert Band) - Pierce, Eseld
Under the leadership of Michael An Gof and Thomas Flamanck, a Cornish host, sometimes estimated to number as many as 15,000, marched to London in protest against excessive taxation. Arriving at Blackheath, they were attacked by the King's army and defeated, and the two rebel leaders were hung, drawn and quartered. On his way to his death, An Gof stated that he would have "a name perpetual and a fame permanent and immortal". A Name Perpetual tells the story of the Rebellion in four connected scenes. The music includes strong elements of the Celtic music tradition, being structured around an old Cornish folk tune. The first scene introduces fragments of the folk theme and reflects the anguish of the Cornish people. The second scene opens with the folk theme on solo piccolo and, as different instruments enter one by one, the march is depicted with its accumulation of forces en route. The march halts suddenly as the Cornishmen discover the unexpected arrival of the English army and the subsequent music portrays the Blackheath Skirmish. In this scene the orchestra is divided into four parts, each working independently to create a sense of chaos, with the stronger elements of the brass and bass instruments representing the English, while the woodwind and saxophones represent the Cornish, struggling to sustain the folk tune throughout the battle. Eventually all the parts come together and the final section is a lament for the lost Cornishmen, fading away to leave only a haunting off-stage trumpet solo.

Inspired by early works for wind band by British composers Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams, this charming concert work is based on an English folk song called As I walked over London Bridge. The arranger Andrew E Lawson writes: 'While I found this folk melody in a set of cello etudes written by Vaughan Williams, it was text that solidified my decision to use this melody, and it is the text that brings some insight into the nature of this folk melody, as well as the nature of the additional original melodies and harmonies throughout the piece.' This medley of traditional folk songs songs uses Clair Fairchild's "Twelve Persian Folk Songs" as its basis. Fairchild took care to preserve their original authenticity by limiting all western harmony and as a result, performers will be required to replicate the songlike phrasing of the lines, rhythmic integrity and the style of the accompaniment. Essential to performance of this composition is helping performers understand that many inflections exist beyond what is written on the page. Musical challenges abound in this well-crafted folk song based composition.

The piece was commissioned by the Norwegian Band Federation Hordaland and conductor Arvid Anthun for the 40th anniversary of Hordaland Youth Band in 2021. The piece is dedicated to Arvid Anthun.Several of our collaborations have focused on arranging and performing Norwegian folk music. This includes projects such as the one Manger Musikklag undertook in the late 90s, concerts, and recording sessions with Jlster Musikklag alongside the fiddler Sigmund Eiks, and now, for the anniversary concert of Hordaland Youth Band.Arvid desired folk music in a modern style. We discussed, among other things, Valter Aamodt's "Hordarapsodi," and he mentioned my Norwegian Dance, a funky piece where I incorporate a folk tune as a crucial element. Aamodt uses the melody "Eg rodde meg ut," or "Strilevise," as it is also known, in his rhapsody.The concept for Strilefunk was therefore to utilize one of the melodies Aamodt had used and additionally draw on the rhythmic experiences that we, as modern band musicians, bring from other genres.Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

This arrangement was commissioned by B3 (The Bergen Woodwind Ensemble). B3 is a large woodwind ensemble located in Bergen with a mix of professional and amateur players. My Heart Remains in Wonder is a well-known Christmas hymn in Scandinavia. I wanted my version to be different to the traditional hymn tune style in which it is normally performed. One day I was outside walking and this idea came to me: an ostinato-like, mechanical skeleton of arpeggio semiquavers on which I could 'hang' the melody. However, I also wanted to do the melody line a bit different. The inspiration for this comes from folk music and the way fiddlers hardly ever lift their bow off the strings when they play. Because of this, it is important that the melody is played in a very sostenuto style in this arrangement. The harmonies lie somewhere between jazz and folk music with a little nod towards Grieg (himself heavily influenced by folk music) in the slow middle section.
