Fiddle Tunes - James Curnow
Fiddle tunes have been an important part of American music since her earliest days. You'll enjoy James Curnow's new suite based on two fiddle tunes from the Revolutionary War period. The first movement uses the flowing melody Lovely Nancy, which is about a beautiful two-masted sailing ship. The second movement comes from a knee-slapping fast paced dance tune called Hay Makers.This will be a wonderful contrast piece to use for that lighter moment in your concert. This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters.

This pavane - Belle qui tiens ma vie was originally composed by Thoinot Arbeau as part of his Orchesographie - a study of French Renaissance social dance written in 1589. Thoinot Arbeau is actually an anagrammatic nom de plume of the French cleric Jehan Tabourot (1520 - 1595). Interestingly enough this pavane is also best known to us as part of Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock, that name also being a nom de plume of Philip Hesletine.This arrangement stays close to the homophonic texture of the original but has added counter lines to add to the dramatic tension in several places.Duration: 3.15

The fourth movement of Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the "seas" of the moon, Serpent Sea is animated, exuberant and somewhat over-the-top. It was inspired by the idea of two huge winged serpents rising out of the waves and frolicking together in a wild, barbaric dance. The pair do, however, show a more graceful side every once in a while - represented by an exotic theme that starts in the clarinet and flute. The movement ends with a wild flurry as the serpents vanish back into the sea.Duration: 3:45
