Danceries (Set II) - Kenneth Hesketh
Danceries Set II was commissioned by Keith Allen and Birmingham Symphonic Winds, supported by PRS for Music Foundation and the RVW Trust. The world premire of this work was given by Birmingham Symphonic Winds, conducted by Keith Allen, at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham in 2011. This second set of Danceries continues the format established in Danceries (Set I), namely in using material taken from Playford's Dancing Master, a collection of folk and popular tunes published in the seventeenth century, to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies have been more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms, but as before, each movement is self-contained, colourful and direct, with its own distinct mood.The outer movements - Jennie's Bawbee and Peascod's Galliarda - share a use of driving percussion writing with a military air. Tom Tinker's Toye and Heart's Ease (movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances. Danceries has come of age!

Based on Alexander Dumas' adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffman's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the ballet premiered in December of 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Tchaikovsky selected eight pieces from the ballet and created The Nutcracker Suite, which became an immediate success and to this day remains one of the most popular ballets, and contains some of the best-loved Christmas music. This suite of three selected short movements scored especially for beginners includes March, Dance of the Reed Flutes, and Russian Dance (Trepak). In the suite Voyages (Travels) Mrs. Lankester has set to music six impressions collected during several stays in France. Originally the six pieces were part of different ballet music scores. In this excellent arrangement by Marcel Peeters they have been gathered into one suite in which the travel impressions serve as a guideline. The first part suggests a Village Fair, whereas the second part expresses explicitly the composer's admiration for Paris in The Invitation. The third part, Nostalgia (Le Lac) is a rather nostalgic reverie about a French lake. The fourth part Reminiscences of Daumier, has to be considered as a tribute to the 19th century painter Honor Daumier of Marseille, famous for his political caricatures. The fifth part, Homage to Mompou, honours the memory of the Spanish composer and pianist Federico Mompou, creator of the primavista style. The suite closes with a cheerful Final Dance (Le Retour), depicting the journey back home.

Jig - Gustav Holst
Together with his good friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst had a strong liking for the abundant folk music of the British Isles. This influence is heard in many of his works and is perhaps strongest in his Second Suite for Military Band and in the Saint Paul Suite for string orchestra. This work was composed in 1913 for the school orchestra of St. Paul's Girls School in London, where Holst was the Director of Music. The suite opens with this exuberant Jig, a dance originating from Scottish and Irish folk music in alternating duple and triple time (6/8 and 9/8), which has been expertly arranged for concert band.
