The premiere of Riverdance took place on April 30, 1994 during a seven-minute pause in the Eurovision Song Contest at the Point Theatre, Dublin. Thanks to 10,000 performances on four continents, TV audiences in the millions and sales of CDs and videos by the bucket-load, Riverdance has since become one of the most successful shows on Earth. Your band will love getting acquainted with Mexican Pictures, a suite in four movements based on Mexican folk music. The first movement, El Butaquito, is based on a very lively folk-song of the same name and is characterised by its many contrasting rhythms. The second movement, Romance Mejicano, creates a peaceful and romantic atmosphere. The title of the third movement, Ballaviejo, means 'Antique Dance', in which the word antique refers to the rhythms that were taken to America by Africa's black population. La Charreada, the final movement, depicts the popular Mexican Rodeo, where the action in the arena is usually supported by instrumental ensembles, the so-called 'Mariacchi'.

This pavane - Belle qui tiens ma vie was originally composed by Thoinot Arbeau as part of his Orchesographie - a study of French Renaissance social dance written in 1589. Thoinot Arbeau is actually an anagrammatic nom de plume of the French cleric Jehan Tabourot (1520 - 1595). Interestingly enough this pavane is also best known to us as part of Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock, that name also being a nom de plume of Philip Hesletine.This arrangement stays close to the homophonic texture of the original but has added counter lines to add to the dramatic tension in several places.Duration: 3.15

The fourth movement of Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the "seas" of the moon, Serpent Sea is animated, exuberant and somewhat over-the-top. It was inspired by the idea of two huge winged serpents rising out of the waves and frolicking together in a wild, barbaric dance. The pair do, however, show a more graceful side every once in a while - represented by an exotic theme that starts in the clarinet and flute. The movement ends with a wild flurry as the serpents vanish back into the sea.Duration: 3:45
