£64.95Farandole (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bizet, Georges - Wiffin, Rob
In taking a lateral look at Bizet's famous Farandole, I decided to omit the full opening statement of the old Provencal tune Marcho dei Rei (March of the Kings), opting instead to make oblique references to it. The combination of this old Christmas song with another traditional Provencal Melody Danso dei Chivau-Frus (Dance of the Hobbyhorse) originally made by Bizet's friend Ernest Guiraud when he compiled Suite No.2 from Bizet's music to the play L'Arlesienne.The farandole is a traditional Provencal dance in which men and women hold hands in a chain and wind through the streets following a musician playing pipe and tabor. In the case of Danso dei Chivau-Frus, the lead dancer would wear a horse's head made of papier mache or something similar.I have attempted to stay true to the spirit of the Farandole and the contrapuntal devices added by Guirand while adding a few touches of interest and harmonic colour here and there.- Rob Wiffin

This work was commissioned jointly by the Royal Air Force Music Service and an American Universities Consortium and received its world premiere during the 1996 RAF British Tour. It is scored for large symphonic wind band, with the addition of voices.The work is a sequel to the highly successful The Sword and the Crown which was premiered in 1991 by the mass bands of the RAF (and also was an RAF commission). That work was based on music written for the Royal Shakespeare Company productions of The Plantagenets and Henry IV, parts 1 and 2 (for productions between 1988 and 1991).The Kings go Forth is similarly based on musical material for those productions. It uses different thematic elements and incorporates them into a three-movement suite entitled: The Church; The People; The State.This reflects the fact that in Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Shakespeare introduces The People as an important element in the dramatic structure. The Church and The State are, of course, both leitmotivs throughout the entire plays. An Agnus Dei is heard at the outset from a solo voice. The ensuing Dies Irae is a fast and, at times, quite violent dance. The two sections which form the basis of the second movement, The People, concentrate on popular elements and reflect to some extent the tavern scenes in the plays. The two ideas presented are a harvest hymn reflecting the country scenes set in Gloucestershire, and a jazzy, 'up-tempo' dance based on the medieval song, Sumer is icumen in. The third movement, The State, deals with the Kings theme in the title of the piece. The juxtaposition of battle music with funeral music for Henry IV and Henry VI leads to a reworking of the leitmotif from the beginning of the work. Le cort?ge du roi Renaud is a suite in five parts. It is based on tales that originated in southern European folk songs, dating back as far as the 16th century. A large portion of these songs are of the genre "Complaintes" songs in which the text gives a detailed description of events having a generally criminal or macabre character. The most familiar song to feature the tales of Roi Renaud is "Fualdes", consisting of 48 verses.The first part of the suite is based on the song "La Porcheronne" (The Swineherd). It telis the story of a young woman forced by her mother-in-law to tend pigs while her husband is away fighting in the war. She is freed only when her husband returns seven years later.The next part tells the story of "La mrquise Empoisonn?e" (The Poisoned Marquise). A marquise is coerced by her king to become his mistress. The jealous queen poisons her by means of a bouquet of deadly scented fiowers.Despite having the character of a merry dance, the third part, "La maumari?e vengee" (The Avenged Wedding), expresses the touching story of Queen Clotilde, persecuted for her refusal to live according to the Aryan beliefs."La belle engloutie" (The Swallowed Beauty) relates the tale of the young wife of King Renaud. She cannot imagine a life without her husband, who was mortally wounded in the war, and begs the earth to open and swallow her up so thst she may rejoin her love.The gruesome content of the final part,"Le tueur de femmes" (The Wife Killer), bears a strong resembiance to the tale of Bluebeard. The story is about a young wife in danger of being drowned in a pond by her husband, which is what happened to her 13 predecessors. Thanks to her cunning, she manages to turn the tables and contrive her husband's demise. 09:20

This pavane - Belle qui tiens ma vie was originally composed by Thoinot Arbeau as part of his Orchesographie - a study of French Renaissance social dance written in 1589. Thoinot Arbeau is actually an anagrammatic nom de plume of the French cleric Jehan Tabourot (1520 - 1595). Interestingly enough this pavane is also best known to us as part of Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock, that name also being a nom de plume of Philip Hesletine.This arrangement stays close to the homophonic texture of the original but has added counter lines to add to the dramatic tension in several places.Duration: 3.15

4th Movement of The Seas of the Moon. The fourth movement of Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the "seas" of the moon, Serpent Sea is animated, exuberant and somewhat over-the-top. It was inspired by the idea of two huge winged serpents rising out of the waves and frolicking together in a wild, barbaric dance. The pair do, however, show a more graceful side every once in a while - represented by an exotic theme that starts in the clarinet and flute. The movement ends with a wild flurry as the serpents vanish back into the sea.Duration: 3:45

Exploring some of the most well-known traditional folk tunes from Korea, here is an appealing and well-paced suite for young players. "Let's Sing and Dance" starts slowly then gradually speeds up similar to how it is usually sung. "The Gate" is a song and game played by Korean children, and this is followed by the beautiful ballad "Bellflowers." Finally "The Palace" completes the set in a bold and optimistic style.
