    Markham Fair Suite - David Marlatt

    This set of short pieces depicts events that occur annually at fairs all across North America. Ferris wheels, cotton candy, and a fanfare to open the fair are all included. Unique to this short suite is Old McDonald's Barn, a popular viewing event with children found at the Markham Fair. In this movement, animal noises are emulated within the group. This work is not too difficult and is very interesting and fun for all players. Every section in the band is featured and gets a chance to perform some melodic material.

    Above the Clouds - Dan Austin

    Humans have a fascination with flying and being up above the clouds, soaring like a bird. From the smallest children to full grown adults, we all have this level of wonder with the idea of being up in the sky. was written by Dan Austin to celebrate that feeling and the sensation of flight. This piece is specifically designed for beginning players, only using six pitches and a limited rhythmic pallet. All parts are doubled, giving the young musicians security across the band. This piece is also a great educational tool for introducing dynamics, slurring, staccato and accents. (1:45)

    Two Holland Tales

    Inspired by two folk songs from the arranger's Dutch heritage, is a piece that combines both lyrical and upbeat sections. "Daar waren twee koningskinderen" (There Were Two Royal Children) is the opening lyrical movement which displays the talents of both the wind and brass sections. The piece then moves into "Toen ik op Nederlands bergen stond" (I Once Stood on the Netherland's Hills). This is a fast movement in 6/8 and features the percussion section. A great arrangement for young band.

    Divertimento - Anna Amalia / arr. Lynne Latham

    Anna Amalia of Prussia held various titles during her lifetime, including Princess and Abbess of Quedlinburg. Born in Berlin, she was one of ten surviving children of the royal family of King Frederick William I of Prussia. Princess Anna Amalia studied harpsichord, piano and counterpoint. Princess Anna also founded a music library collection, which included autographed scores of J.S. Bach and other composers. This collection still exists today (Amalien Bibliothek). This two-movement Divertimento in Bb Major has something for everyone. The melodic and secondary parts are passed equally between the instruments. The piano part is quite playable for a high school student. It has the character of a conversation between friends gathering for a friendly afternoon tea. This arrangement is scored for piano quartet, with a substitue clarinet part in place of violin.
