The Proclamation of Christmas - Score only - Stephen Bulla
Program NotesOriginally written as the 'show opener' for one of The Salvation Army's spectacular annual Christmas Carol concerts in London, and premiered by The International Staff Band, Stephen Bulla's overture The Proclamation of Christmas is an extended work that features a number of popular Christmas tunes, including Hark The Herald Angels Sing, Ding Dong Merrily on High, and The First Nowell. There are also two slightly less well-known tunes that are linked to the carols - While Shepherds Watched and Angels from the Realms of Glory - and the piece concludes with a final flourish from O Come, All Ye Faithful.Its dramatic opening and imaginative structure make it a rewarding piece to rehearse and perform, and it certainly fulfills all the requirements of a Christmas show opener! So, we firmly believe that this overture will be a popular addition to Christmas repertoire for concert band in the same way as it was in its original version for brass band.

Christmas is the time of the year where everyone comes together, and peace, family and friendship bonds are strengthened. When selecting repertoire for your Christmas concert, it's difficult to find new arrangements that are both challenging and fun to work on, as well as fun for the audience. Crazy For Christmas is one of those pieces by the Belgian composer Bert Appermont. He uses canons and even fugues throughout this arrangement and foresees a spectacular ending. It is based on Il est n le divin Enfant and Away in a Manger but refers wittily to JingleBells, Deck the Halls, The Twelve Days of Christmas and Hark, the Herald Angels Sing. So 'crazy' all the way!

The Spirit of Christmas is a medley of charming Christmas carols, all with an international character. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Christmas Overture appeared posthumously in 1925. Originally orchestrated by Sydney Baynes, it features God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. It is thought by some to have been put together from incidental music he wrote for a children's play called The Forest of Wild Thyme. This band arrangement, based on Baynes' orchestra score, omits the largely developmental middle section of the original, shortening the performance time by two minutes, while retaining all of the traditional carol material.
