Tylman Susato (circa 1500-1561) was one of the worlds first music publishers and seller of musical instruments. He left behind several collections containing arrangements of Dutch songs and dance and also published several of his own works. Three of these, published in 1551, were called Musyck Boexken, or music book. Almost 500 years later, Jan de Haan has used one of these melodies, Mohrentanz, for this theme with three variations.Duration: 6:45

Dillon's Flight was inspired by the legend of the Phoenix, a bird of fire that does not lay eggs, has no younglings, was here at the beginning of time, and yet still lives today in a hidden desert land. Every 500 years, the sun burns down on the Phoenix until a flash of light appears and it becomes consumed by the flames of fire. From the pile of silvery-grey ash rises up a young Phoenix. The young Phoenix then takes flight and sings its glorious song to the sun for another five hundred years. Paladin (heroic knight) was written for the music society De Heibloem from Meeuwen, Belgium and tells the story of the disastrous Saint Nicholas Day of 1648. In the first half of the seventeenth century, the mercenary armies of Karel van Lorreinen terrorised several villages in the province of Limburg. Between 1,500 and 1,600 farmers gathered in Peer on December 6, 1648, to battle against the cruel mercenaries who looted and burned down their villages. The brave farmers did not stand a chance and were ambushed in Meeuwen and within quarter of an hour there were four hundred fatalities and at least as many wounded. In history books, this encounter is referred to as the shortest battle ever. A truly heroic work suitable for all concert programmes.Duration: 7:15

In 1,500 B.C. the volcano of Santorin, an island to the north of Crete, exploded with unprecedented violence sending millions of tons of volcanic ash into the atmosphere, producing intense atmospheric shock waves, and creating disastrous tsunamis. It is now believed that this caused the extinction of the great Minoan civilization.
