Chant of the Phoenix - Fisher Tull
Chant of the Phoenix is based on the legend of the sacred bird in Egyptian religion. After living for 500 years, the Phoenix would build a nest of herbs, fan the nest with its wings to set it afire, and burn itself to death. Fromthe ashes would emerge a new bird which, after maturing and testing its strength in flight, would soar off to the sun. (9:00)

£137.99Paladin - Kevin Houben
Paladin (heroic knight) was written for the music society De Heibloem from Meeuwen, Belgium and tells the story of the disastrous Saint Nicholas Day of 1648. In the first half of the seventeenth century, the mercenary armies of Karel van Lorreinen terrorized several villages in the province of Limburg. Between 1,500 and 1,600 farmers gathered in Peer on December 6, 1648, to battle against the cruel mercenaries who looted and burned down their villages. The brave farmers did not stand a chance and were ambushed in Meeuwen and within quarter of an hour there were four hundred fatalities and at least as many wounded. In history books, this encounter is referred to as the shortestbattle ever. A truly heroic work suitable for all concert programmes.

Susato Variations - Jan de Haan
Tylman Susato (circa 1500-1561) was one of the worlds first music publishers and seller of musical instruments. He left behind several collections containing arrangements of Dutch songs and dance and also published several of his own works. Three of these, published in 1551, were called Musyck Boexken, or music book. Almost 500 years later, Jan de Haan has used one of these melodies, Mohrentanz, for this theme with three variations.

£164.99Hellas - Greek Suite - Istvan Bogar
This splendidly instrumented work successfully combines 20th-century musical language with the antique elements deriving from its theme - for example, in the first movement we immediately find an ancient Greek asymmetrical rhythm. The second movement takes us on an adventurous journey to those astonishing geological wonders, the Meteoras; the third movement presents a picture of the Delphic dancers, in its title the fourth movement indicates the form used in it, which preserves the unity between the thousands-of-years-old building and its contrasting environment, echoing to the music of the bouzouki. In the suite the composer expertly exploits the possibilities of instrumentation offered by the wind orchestra, this extremely effective work can be a rewarding concert piece for any ensemble. (Recorded by Mirasound on CD 'Salute from Hungary' wwm 500.009 for World Wind Music label - www.worldwindmusic.nl ).

£118.99Goodnight Moon (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Whitacre, Eric - Markowski, Michael
"Over the past few years I must have read Goodnight Moon to my son a thousand times - maybe more. Somewhere around reading number 500, I began hearing little musical fragments as I read, and over time those fragments began to blossom into a simple, sweet lullaby. I knew it was a long shot, but I asked my manager, Claire Long, to contact HarperCollins and see if they would allow the text to be set to music. To my surprise and delight they agreed - the first time they had ever allowed Goodnight Moon to be used in such a way. I composed the piece relatively quickly, originally setting the text for harp, string orchestra, and my son's mother, soprano Hila Plitmann. I later arranged Goodnight Moon for SATB choir and piano. More recently, my dear friend Verena M?senbichler-Bryant arranged the piece for wind ensemble and soloist. The melody of Goodnight Moon will forever make me think of those quiet nights, reading my son to sleep." -Eric Whitacre
