The Middle Ages are in the history of Europe during the period between classical antiquity and the modern era, roughly between the years 500 and 1500 AD. Traditionally this period was situated between the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century and the Renaissance that began in Italy from the fourteenth century. The "Kolomoki Mounds" are one of the largest and earliest Woodland Period earthwork mound complexes in the Southeastern United States. Constructed between 350-600 A.D., the eight mounds include a Great Temple Mound, a ceremonial mound, several burial mounds and a large plaza in the center where some 1,500 residents lived in a large village of thatched houses. This rhythmic piece pulses with life and celebrates the Swift Creek and Weeden Island Indian peoples who lived there. Kolomoki is designed to make your beginners sound great.

"Village Talk" is based on the history of Ruinen and its musical society Crescendo. The original title was: "De Heerlyckheid Ruinen". A "Hoge Heerlyckheid" was an independent area with its own laws and jurisdiction from the Middle Ages (ca. 500 to ca. 1500) until late in the 18th century. Music from the Middle Ages and through the Baroque to contemporary pop and big band arrangements was used.

Over the past few years I must have read Goodnight Moon to my son a thousand times - maybe more. Somewhere around reading number 500, I began hearing little musical fragments as I read, and over time those fragments began toblossom into a simple, sweet lullaby. I knew it was a long shot, but I asked my manager, Claire Long, to contact HarperCollins and see if they would allow the text to be set to music. To my surprise and delight they agreed - thefirst time they had ever allowed Goodnight Moon to be used in such a way. I composed the piece relatively quickly, originally setting the text for harp, string orchestra, and my son's mother, soprano Hila Plitmann. I laterarranged Goodnight Moon for SATB choir and piano. More recently, my dear friend Verena Msenbichler-Bryant arranged the piece for wind ensemble and soloist. The melody of Goodnight Moon will forever make me think of those quietnights, reading my son to sleep. -Eric Whitacre
