Whirlwinds - John Kinyon
A rhythmic Allegretto theme opens this ABA piece in grand fashion. The first theme will give your band the opportunity to work on a wide variety of 16th-note rhythms while paying attention to dynamics and phrasing. The second theme is in 3/4 time and is slower. It features a swirling melody that gives the piece its distinctive name. The piece then returns to the up-tempo first theme and closes the work with a loud, accelerando ending. (Grade 1---Easy)

Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton
A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.

Turkish March - Robert Longfield
This delightful march from Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 11, K.331 is masterfully scored by Robert Longfield in a light, allegretto style. The piece moves between a B minor/major tonality. Robert has layered many of the sections to create a moving and ever-changing timbrel pattern. An easy grade 4.

This piece is based on 4 songs from the island Man. The first, The Good Old Way, is an old and typical Air, mostly written in Dorian mode. The biggest part of the song is probably added aroun 1882, after the introduction of the primitive Methodism on the island.The second song, on which the faster part of the piece is composed, is a real Folk tune: The Manx Fiddler. Chaloner, a seventeenth century writer, found out that the island of Man's population felt very much attracted to the violin and that in almost every family someone played the instrument.The third song, Sweet Water in the Common, is about dike boards and the last part is a beautiful old hymn, The Harvest of the Sea, sung by fishermen after their safe return.

Here we have a rather easy piece with a grand effect. This 2 x 4 voice Renaissance piece was composed by Orlando di Lasso for double choir. It can be performed by two (half) bands or by a band and a quartet. The separate parts are not really difficult, yet the performance as a canon can cause some difficulties, but that's precisely the pedagogical characteristic of the piece.

Festouverture [1902] - Armas Järnefelt
The strong voice of Finnish national romanticism Armas Jrnefelt (1869-1958) composed his jubilant Festouverture (Festive Overture) for the official opening of the Finnish National Theatre on 9 April 1902 Robert J. Lullaby for Clarinets
This is a wonderful way to feature the lyrical playing of your beginning clarinet section. A simple accompaniment in 3/4 provides a nice background for the beautiful melody presented by the clarinets. Plenty of cues are provided, as well as ample amounts of rest, in each part.
