La Valiente is a rousing Spanish piece that combines flamenco, tango, and just plain fun that's sure to be a bright spot on any group's next concert. Written in d minor, it modulates approximately halfway through to a happier sounding F major, but as the piece concludes, students find themselves back in d minor. While there are quite a few accidentals, there are none within the piece by which students playing grade 3 music should be surprised, and they lend a nice authenticity to the sound. 1st trumpet's highest note is G. 1st and 2nd clarinets, only, cross the break.

The piece is a homage to the actual Citadel (also known as the Cairo Citadel). It was built during the medieval Islamic-era fortification of Egypt by Salah ad-Din and developed further by subsequent Egyptian rulers. The Citadel of Saladin was in use during some of the most significant events in Egyptian history, from the time it was constructed to the end of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, which was in power from the early nineteenth century until the 1952 revolution, when the modern Egyptian republic was born. It is written in C-minor. Only the 1st clarinet crosses the break, and the 1st trumpet's highest note is F. The duration and some of the rhythms bring this work to an easy grade 3.

Arranged to reflect the Medieval origins of this 12th century hymn, this beautiful setting offers great opportunities to develop unison phrasing of long melodic lines. Nauset is one of three movements of a larger work called "Beachscapes." Nauset beach is located on the ocean side of Cape Cod Massachusetts, where the largest waves can be found on the New England coast. This music is a bit whimsical, portraying a beach scene with surfers falling off their boards, people on the beach, and people going to the food shacks. The music is quite syncopated and gives a jazzy, fun atmosphere.Ranges are mostly within a Grade 3 range, with the 1st trumpet's highest note is G.

£280.00A Child's Garden of Dreams
David Maslanka's A Child's Garden of Dreams for Wind Ensemble, written in 1981, takes inspiration from the writings of Carl Jung, specifically the dreams recounted in Man And His Symbols. Five of the twelve dreams recounted by Jung serve as motifs and titles for the five movements of this composition: 1. There is a desert on the moon where the dreamer sinks so deeply in to the ground that she reaches hell; 2. A drunken woman falls into the water and comes out renewed and sober; 3. A horde of small animals frightens the dreamer. The animals increase to a tremendous size, and one of them devours the little girl; 4. A drop of water is seen as it appears when looked at through a microscope. The girl sees that the drop is full of tree branches. This portrays the origin of the world; and 5. An ascent into heaven where pagan dances are being celebrated; and a descent into hell, where angels are doing good deeds. A Child's Garden of Dreams is a pillar of the standard wind ensemble canon, performerd hundreds of times by a variety of professional and collegiate ensembles and recorded on several critically acclaimed albums. Maslanka has also set the work for full orchestra (C672).
