Morning Song (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Features the appealing melodies, exciting rhythms, and solid scoring that you have come to expect from Ed Huckeby. After an effective Maestoso introduction, the bright Allegro really punches out the main theme. The contrasting Andante section in 3/4 has a beautiful melody first presented in the upper woodwinds and then later with the full ensemble. Huckeby's previous pieces at this grade level have been extremely well received and "Oxford Pointe" is certainly one of his nicest efforts to date.

Morning Song features the horn quartet mostly in a soloistic role - indeed there is an accompanied cadenza towards the end of the piece - but there are moments where the horns assume their conventional concert band role as harmonic support or playing the counter melody. The Englishman, Bishop Reginald Heber (1783-1826), wrote Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning for Epiphany. These lyrics were published in 1811, in the Christian Observer, but were set to music and issued in hymnal books only after Heber's death, by English composer and organist James Proctor Harding. Mosaic is an aural representation of the varied qualities each of us possess and contribute to the whole of our American society. As a kaleidoscope of various musical elements coming together, this work evokes a visual of mosaics - tiny tiles individually glued together to create a broader image. Composer Stephen Paulus integrates layers of sound with varying meters that feature every instrument in the band.

Extra Score. Mosaic is an ancient ornamental art form that involves fitting together small pieces to form a larger design. In a like way, the opening movement of this work contains a number of short musical statements, based around the interval of a tritone, which are used, both melodically and harmonically in its construction.
