Nearer My God to Thee (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Custer & Henderson

If your band enjoyed the popular Just a Closer Walk, here's another Canadian Brass favourite, carefully scored for full band by Calvin Custer. It begins with a slow 3/4 version, in a New Orleans street band style, and then kicks into snazzy Dixieland, with small band features and roaring full band sections. Another classic from the masters of showmanship.

Nearest Thing by Far to Heaven (Flute Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

An expressive solo for flute and band, this slow, blue-tinged piece is the result of the opportunity given by the Covid lockdown of 2020 to look anew at some old songs. In this one, a fairly straightforward but expressive melodic line is stated in its original form then repeated in a much expanded and occasionally florid setting, allowing the soloist to cover a range from low C up to top A. Eventually the music returns to the tranquillity of the opening. The band accompaniment was written in 2024 and is kept light but colourful allowing the soloist to be expressive without fighting to project through the texture.Duration: 3.45

Nedslatt, Sorgemarsj (Dead End, Funeral March) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Olsen Vadsten, Oystein

An addition to the composer's series of folk music inspired pieces, has the slightly condescending title "Dead End". The piece is a funeral march and so also written for an occasion, where this style of music was a natural inspiration. It is built on a drum ostinato, which is followed by a melody in Norwegian folk music style. The repetitions in the melody line and rhythm, create a hypnotic effect, leaving us in a special state of mind, alternating between deep sorrow, bottomless despair and grateful gratitude. The piece has proven to be effective, both as a concert opener and as the last piece in a concert. Duration: 6.10

Nemesis (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fagan, Gary

The dictionary defines the word nemesis as: 1. goddess of divine retribution; 2. one that inflicts retribution or vengeance; 3. a formidable and usually victorious rival. This piece was written to convey the sense of the definition. Although the piece begins serenely, it soon ventures into a driving storm of contemporary rhythms and harmonies that continues until the end of the piece. A feeling of conflict between formidable musical forces permeates the piece; creating an exciting new work for young bands. Duration: 4.00

Nemu-Susato (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

Commissioned by the Japan Band Clinic Committee of Yamaha for the Nemu Band Directors Clinic in Nemu no Sato, May 18-20, 1997. The surprising title of this work is an indication of its content. By combining the somewhat similar names 'Nemu no Sato' and 'Susato' into a new word, Jan Van der Roost has produced a significant and interesting subject. The Yamaha corporation has extensive facilities in Nemu no Sato, Japan, including a concert hall, recording studios, hotel and so on. Concerts, workshops, clinics and other events are held here, including the annual Nemu Band Directors Clinic, which consists of numerous musical events. Jan Van der Roost served as guest conductor and speaker in 1994. He was invited again for the 1997 clinic, this time with a composition assignment. The difficulty level of his piece was to be Grade 2 - 3 bands. With this in mind, Mr. Van der Roost strove to create a renaissance-like sound. Simultaneously he wished to create a tribute to Tielman Susato who, like Jan Van der Roost, lived and worked in Antwerp in the 16th century. The first performance of Nemu-Susato was conducted by the composer, performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Band, and took place during the Nemu Band Directors Clinic on May 19, 1997.Duration: 6.00

Nepotism (Movement II from Symphony No.1, The Borgias) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.

A sinister legend hangs over the Borgia family, a legend of corruption, abuse of power, orgies, sex and murder. These rumours proliferated especially during the papacy of Alexander VI, a descendant of the family, who was even called the Antichrist. On his death, contemporary witnesses reported that the devil himself prowled around the death chamber and a black dog run along the corridors of the Vatican as his emissary. One might say that this Borgia pope, who ruled together with his family with the greatest brutality, became demonised. Unscrupulousness, poison-toting, incest and other malice are to this day the hallmarks of this pontiffNepotism: Rodrigo Borgia was elected Pope on 11 August 1492. From the very start, the new pope was prepared to use any means to eliminate his opponents, either through the infamous Borgia poison or by excommunication and execution. His son Cesare, who wanted little to do with the church, was appointed cardinal against his will. Alessandro Farnese, broth of Giulia Farnese, the Pope's mistress, also became a cardinal. Numerous Spaniards were brought into the country and were appointed to ecclesiastical posts. This infuriated the opponents of Alexander VI. The Dominican Girolamo Savonarola from Florence demanded the removal of the Pope. He was tortured and banned. Giuliano della Rovere wanted to convene councils to depose the Pope, which Alexander managed to prevent through artful political manoeuvrings. Through great brutality, brilliant political skill and power games, this pope was able to achieve his goal of leaving for his children a great legacy. Alexander VI constantly changed his allies and always acted unscrupulously to improve his financial situation and expand his sphere of influence. At the centre of the second movement of this work is the medieval hymn Dies Irae (Day of Wrath), which acts as a warning in the background condemning the Pope's actions.Duration: 9.15

Nessun Dorma (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Puccini, Giacomo - Beringen, Robert van

Nessun Dorma, an aria from Puccini's Turandot, is now instantly recognised due mainly to the performance by the late Pavarotti at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Since that time its popularity has continued to grow and it is now often thought of as Pavarotti's theme tune. This version for concert band retains all the intense feeling of the original.Duration: 3:00
