In 1,500 B.C. the volcano of Santorin, an island to the north of Crete, exploded with unprecedented violence sending millions of tons of volcanic ash into the atmosphere, producing intense atmospheric shock waves, and creating disastrous tsunamis. It is now believed that this caused the extinction of the great Minoan civilization. This piece was written in the spring of 2004, prior to the more recent tsunami in December of that year, and is dedicated to the memory of all who were affected by that disaster. Duration: 4.45

Tu Ungane (Let's Join Together) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Watson, Scott

Tu Ungane (Swahili, pronounced TOO une-GAH-nay) means "Let's join together" and refers both to musicians coming together to play as well as African and Western styles merging musically. Western musical styles such as Gospel, Blues, and Jazz owe much to African influence. African music has been influenced by the West as well, fusing British military and brass band music, along with the hymns and songs of missionaries from Europe and the United States, with tribal folk elements. Tu Ungane explores his musical cross-pollination incorporating the Tanzanian folk song "Asali Ya Nyuki" ("Honey of Bees") and original musical material in the style of the British-African fusion.Duration: 2.00

To start he created a note-row from t he musical letters of James' name giving a minor seventh chord and an added flattened fifth. From this point everything went into the pot bringing out simplet tunes, cadenzas, and even muti-phonics! A real challenge for the performer but joy for the listener! Score & Parts. The concerto is in three movements, following the usual quick-slow-quick pattern: Allegro deciso, Lento e mesto, Allegro giocoso. The first has a sonata form shell with two contrasting themes, the first rhythmic in character, the second lyrical. There is a reference made in the development section to the opening theme of Vaughan Williams's tuba concerto, but this merges into the other material in the development section. The second movement unfolds a long cantabile melody for the soloist, which contrasts to a ritornello idea. The central climax of the movement triumphantly heralds the main theme from the band. The last movement is in rondo form, alternating the main theme with two episodes. The first of these is a broad sweeping tune, the second is jazz-like in style. After a short cadenza, reference is made to the opening of the concerto, and the work ends with a triumphal flourish. Duration: 18 mins. American Grade 4.5

Near the end there is an elaborate and technically demanding cadenza. The wind band orchestration is by James Gourlay. Tuba Concerto (Tuba Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ellerby, Martin

The emphasis is on musicality, and the two contrasting movements investigate the under-exploited lyrical side of the instrument as well as allowing soloists to show their technical prowess.
