The Turkish March (Marcia alla turca) is a well-known classical march theme by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was written in the Turkish style, popular in music at the time. The theme was first used in Beethoven's Six Variations on an Original Theme, Op.76, of 1809. In 1811, Beethoven wrote an overture and incidental music to a play by August von Kotzebue called The Ruins of Athens (Op.113), which premiered in Pest in 1812. In the nineties, the Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan recorded a sparkling version of Vicki Sue Robinson's disco classic Turn the Beat Around. She gave the song a catchy Latin beat, and with this new impulse, it was a worldwide hit. With the sentence from the song text "Love to hear percussion" in mind, Peter Kleine Schaars incorporated a compelling percussion solo in his arrangement. TURN THE WORLD AROUND (Intermediate Concert Band) - Brown, Michael

Harry Belafonte's masterful song about the interconnection between fire, water, mountain and spirit was performed to much acclaim on the The Muppet Show in 1977. The song, which explains that through understanding we can all "turn the world around," became a favourite of Muppet creator Jim Henson and was performed at his memorial service. Featuring an infectious African-flavored groove in 5/4, this is a unique and effective setting for band.
