On being asked by James Gourlay, one of the world's leading tuba players, to write this work the composer was given a free hand to write whatever he wanted. A rare request in a commission! To start he created a note-row from t he musical letters of James' name giving a minor seventh chord and an added flattened fifth. From this point everything went into the pot bringing out simplet tunes, cadenzas, and even muti-phonics! A real challenge for the performer but joy for the listener! TUBA CONCERTO (Gregson) (Tuba/Concert Band) - Gregson, Edward

Score & Parts. The concerto is in three movements, following the usual quick-slow-quick pattern: Allegro deciso, Lento e mesto, Allegro giocoso. The first has a sonata form shell with two contrasting themes, the first rhythmic in character, the second lyrical. There is a reference made in the development section to the opening theme of Vaughan Williams's tuba concerto, but this merges into the other material in the development section. The second movement unfolds a long cantabile melody for the soloist, which contrasts to a ritornello idea. The central climax of the movement triumphantly heralds the main theme from the band. The last movement is in rondo form, alternating the main theme with two episodes. The first of these is a broad sweeping tune, the second is jazz-like in style. After a short cadenza, reference is made to the opening of the concerto, and the work ends with a triumphal flourish. Duration: 18 mins. American Grade 4.5

Parts only. This work was commissioned by the Besses O' Th' Barn Band for soloist James Gourlay, with funds from the Musicians' Union. The melodic patterns of the concerto are based on traditional, often classical modes. A three-note motif forms the basis of the first and third movements whilst the second begins with a slower version of the main theme. Near the end there is an elaborate and technically demanding cadenza. The wind band orchestration is by James Gourlay. The emphasis is on musicality, and the two contrasting movements investigate the under-exploited lyrical side of the instrument as well as allowing soloists to show their technical prowess.
