This piece is meant to take on a lush Irish feel, as this best compares to Father McAnulty's (former President of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh) gentle nature. The poem is from an old Irish blessing.

Extra Score. This portrait overture was written for the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain and was originally commissioned by Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs and the Royal Air Force Central Band. It starts with Scramble, an alarm sounds for the pilots to scramble to their planes. The next short section This Was Their Finest Hour is nostalgic and lyrical in nature followed by Bandits at One O'clock, a short battle sequence. Soon the aerial skirmish subsides and is replaced by Victory and Flypast, which builds on the patriotic melody hear earlier, and brings the piece to a triumphant close. Recorded on Polyphonic QPRM157D Spirit of the Dance. Duration 5'00"

Theme and Fugue (from The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Britten, Benjamin - Saucedo, Richard L.

Originally composed to introduce the various instruments of the orchestra, Britten's "Young Person's Guide" follows a set of variations based on a melody by Henry Purcell. In this setting for wind band, Richard Saucedo presents the opening theme followed by Britten's exuberant fugue which culminates in a glorious finale and recap of Purcell's melody. A stunning work for mature ensembles. Duration. 4:40

Theme and Tirade (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Saucedo, Richard L.

The opening of this unique work features a gentle and serene theme traded between clarinet, oboe and trumpet soloists played over a lush harmonic background. The mood shifts abruptly, however, as the tirade begins! A predominant timpani pattern helps propel this section through a series of angular passages, driving rhythmic figures, a jazz-tinged clarinet solo, and ultimately blossoming into a triumphant and glorious conclusion.Duration: 3:30

Theme and Variation VI (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Brahms, Johannes - Brand, Geoffrey

It is apt that Theme and Variation VI by Brahms has been arranged for wind band since the theme is taken from a Divertimento for wind players by Haydn. It is probably an old pilgrims chorale (St Anthony). In 1873 Brahms wrote his Variations on a theme of Haydn for orchestra. The theme itself is remarkable for its irregular phrase lengths. A strong rhythm dominated throughout Variation VI. If required, the theme may be played separately without the variation.
