Halloween is celebrated in many countries around the world on October 31. Traditionally, children go door-to-door dressed up in costumes and collect sweets and treats. A hollowed out pumpkin with a face carved into it, called a jack-o-lantern, is a traditional symbol of Halloween. Some jack-o-lanterns have scary faces, while others have fun, whimsical faces. The trombones in this piece represent the jack-o-lanterns with their whimsical faces--hence the title The Funny Pumpkins. Your trombone section will have immense fun with this new solo feature.

Written for the 7th Regiment of the 107th Infantry of the New York National Guard in 1922 and composed late in his career, this is considered one of Sousa's best marches. During the 1940's, BBC radio listeners enjoyed a weekly comedy programme, which starred the comedian Tommy Handley, called It's That Man Again (ITMA). A feature of each programme was a witty arrangement for orchestra of a popular or Music Hall song. These were always made specially for the programme, many were by Jacob, Gordon. The Galloping Major was an ITMA arrangement. A popular Music Hall tune from the Victorian era, in Jacob, Gordon's hands, becomes a musical gem. This new version for Concert Band, transcribed by Steadman-Allen, Ray, retains all the fun of the original.

The Gates of Troy tells the story of the 1184 B.C. Trojan War in Ancient Greek times. This historic conflict featuring the heroes Achilles, Odysseus, Hector and the beautiful Helena, lasted 10 years and was settled by the famous ruse of the Greeks, the 'Trojan Horse'. This exciting work is all about the battle between Greece and Troy.
