An inspiring composition which features narration based on the story of how Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the famous carol," I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day". The hand bell choir part (3 octaves) is totally optional, but gives the director a method of involving local hand bell choirs in the holiday concert. The narration is essential to the performance and also provides an opportunity to involve a local dignitary into the performance. Very distinctive and unique.

The composer was inspired by Oyama City's slogan, 'water, green and earth', to write this festive fanfare. Following a gentle opening a fanfare leads to a magnificent chorale. The Berlin Rag evokes the rich harmonic sound-world of 1920s Berlin and contemporary jazz, fused with the technique of American Ragtime. The scoring is highly colouristic in nature, and has avoided any weighty doublings. There are also many solo opportunities for all the principal players, either chamber-like combinations, duets or solo lines. The magical crunchy effect of the tutti band is reserved until the end where it is finally released in a blaze of brass writing, spiked with timpani and percussion.
