Scarborough Fair, Variations on (Concert Band - Score and parts) - Custer, Calvin

First published in 1989, this work from the late Calvin Custer epitomises his command of orchestration and understanding of musical pacing. The familiar folk melody is stated first by a solo flute then followed by a remarkable series of variations starting with a brass choir accompanied by woodwind flourishes. An Andante variation features the woodwind choir accompanying solos by baritone and oboe, and this leads to a striking fugue variation and bold finish. This work was commissioned to open the Scarlet and Gold Concert in 2015. The concert is given annually in London by the musicians of the Household Division (Guards) of the Army, renowned for the splendour of their uniforms. The piece is intentionally energetic, vivacious and brilliant in style, seeking to capture the sparkle of gold in the uniforms with a few strong and majestic seams of scarlet underpinning the texture. There are no specific military connotations in the music and the piece is a dynamic concert opener for any programme. In the original performance a fanfare team was added for dramatic effect but the piece is fully performable without fanfare trumpets.Duration: 5:00

An arrangement of the famous violin solo for solo clarinet and band, Scenes de la Csarda No.4 Opus 32 by the Hungarian composer and violinist Jeno Hubay is much better known by its subtitle Hejre Kati (loosely translated as ?€Pretty Katie?€). It was first published in 1890 and is based on three Hungarian melodies. This arrangement stays close to the original and provides a technical tour de force for the soloist. Duration: 4.3
