James Curnow's impressive compositional style resounds in this tribute to the heroic deeds of so many citizens of Sioux City, Iowa upon the tragic crash of United Airlines Flight 232 in 1989. This will be the landmark piece of theyear for your solid grade 3 band. A bold fanfare opening soon warms with the stately clarinets. Subtle reflection on the fanfare statement permeates the development of the piece, keeping the city's heroism and self-sacrifice inmind as the piece traverses its many moods. James Curnow's skillful orchestration allows the director endless opportunities to take the band's level of performance to higher levels.

A Time There Was - Harrie Janssen

A Time There Was, was composed after being commissioned by the Trumpet Corps of the Royal Dutch Military Police. The piece is chorale like in character and was initially intended for memorial like concerts. It is also suitable as a quiet interlude in your concert. At the end of the piece the opening of the Dutch hymn "Hours, Days, Months, Years" is quoted, referring to the transient nature of existence.

A Tom Sawyer Portrait - Jarvis

Mark Twain's colorful characters come to musical life in "A Tom Sawyer Portrait!" The journey begins in St. Petersburg, Missouri, with a jaunty musical portrayal of Tom and Huck and a ragtime sequence which depicts the sleepy river town. An Americana-style ballad follows that is tender, lyrical and poignant. This segues into a "no holds barred" blues section representing the mighty Mississippi. The Portrait concludes with our heroes' return, featuring a recap of the opening theme augmented in the brass and accompanied by woodwind runs and exciting percussion. This is a great selection for the concert band that demands solid musicianship but will reward students for their efforts!

A Touch of Klez! was written for flute or alto saxophone solo and concert band. The work is based on three klezmer melodies: 'Ani Purim', 'Shlof Mayn Kind' and 'Freilachs Fun L.A.'. Klezmer is a form of traditional Yiddish music that originated in Eastern Europe during the Late Middle Ages and was originally intended as music for weddings. In the 20th century, klezmer melodies in Europe were influenced by other music styles; in America, jazz had a notable influence on this compelling music.
