Civil War Echoes

As the nation commemorates 150 years since the Civil War, here is an appealing medley for young players that uses music of the period. The bugle call Taps originated during the Civil War and is used here at the beginning of thepiece and incorporated again at the end. The tender ballad Tenting on the Old Campground provides lyric contrast before closing with the rousing spiritual Free At Last. Dur: 3:25

The Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan possibly had his greatest success in 1972 with Clair. With its jazzy harmony, this song deviated a little from the spirit of the time. Stefan Schwalgin took the theme of Clair as a starting point, and gave the melody to the alto saxophone. His arrangement fits the tradition of solo works in which it is not so much about technical virtuosity, but rather about the sincerity and charm of the expression. Let your saxophonist shine with this luscious new solo work.

Clair de Lune - Claude Debussy

Clair de Lune was originally written for piano, as the 3rd movement of the Suite Bergamasque by French composer Claude Debussy. This arrangement for trombone and wind orchestra was written at the request of Joe Alessi, principaltrombone of the New York Philharmonic and internationally renowned soloist. There is an alternative solo part included for alto saxophone.
