Celestial Flight - Jim H. Johnson

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth..." Inspired by the poem "High Flight" this work takes musical flight with sweeping woodwinds and mallets soaring above the cinematic melodic statement by brass. The highly rhythmic melody soars upward to the middle, lyrical section which seems to float effortlessly through the upper reaches of the sky. As the sustained expressive melody reaches it's musical apex it reunites with the opening material to finish with a swift and breathtaking finish.

Celestial Legend - David Shaffer

A delicate opening moves into a frenzy of woodwind activity over powerful brass fanfares. After a brief lyrical section, the piece resumes its fire, erupting in celebration as it catapults toward its heroic ending! Includes CD of performance.

Celestial Odyssey - Timothy Johnson

The pure excitement of space exploration and discovery are proclaimed in the moving work for young band. We follow the progress of the astronauts from their launch, through a tranquil space walk, and back into our atmosphere for a dramatic ending, stopping for a brief saxophone solo on the way. The tempo never lags, even in the contemplative portions of the piece, and there is plenty of technically challenging yet playable passages to go around.

Celestial Song - Robert Spittal

Composer Robert Spittal was moved to complete this work in response to the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy in 2012, and serves as a reflection of our complicated feelings of grief and loss. The music is simple and direct, and meant as a hopeful work for young players. Moved by a metaphor describing the victims as "twenty-six new diamonds in the sky", the title is a reference to the stars which we look upward to for inspiration, for hope, and to dream of better things to come.

Celtic Air and Dance

Drawing on the rich and varied tradition of Celtic folk songs, this piece opens with the touching and melodious "The Parting Glass." The flutes and percussion take center stage on the dance-like "Tha Mi Sgith (A Fairy's Love Song)", then finally the entire band gets into the act for the rousing finish. Continuing with Michael's popular series of Celtic Air and Dance arrangements, the third installment opens with Red is the Rose (or Loch Lomond) in a flowing ballad treatment. The lively Bill Sullivan's Polka follows and featuresvarious sections of the band. The flutes start things off followed by the rest of the woodwinds, trumpets, percussion, low brass and finally the entire ensemble in an energetic finish. Dur: 3:10
