The Spell - Oliver Waespi

The Spell is a musical interpretation of an old legend from the Alpstein, a mystical mountain area in the east of Switzerland. According to the tale, a shepherd boy, Hennes, cared for his animals on the alpine pastures, but many of the animals fell ill with a terrible plague and died. The mountain spirit appeared to Hennes out of the mists of Sntis and so the story unfolds... The music of The Spell follows the narrative of this legend, in which musical motifs are assigned to the essential elements of the story, a technique seen in late romantic repertoire by composers such as Wagner or Richard Strauss.

The Spheres - Ola Gjeilo

This evocative work is a wind band version of the composer's mass for choir and string orchestra entitled Sunrise. The piece is built around a five-note chorale theme, and the opening section features an overlapping fade-in/fade-out effect meant to give a sense of floating in space, as if surrounded by stars and planets. A stunning composition from an exciting new voice in the band world - Ola Gjeilo. The legends surrounding Saint Catherine of Alexandria, also known as the Great Martyr Saint Catherine, were the source of inspiration for this work. It depicts events surrounding her life in five musical episodes. The first episode presents the Emperor's procession and theme. All is well until a heathen sacrificial ritual is heard in the second movement. After the sacrifice, Catherine and her lyrical, reflective theme make an appearance. A dispute breaks out between Catherine and the Emperor, which can be heard in the heated exchange between their respective themes. Catherine is sentenced to die by the breaking wheel. The voices of angels can be heard in the finale, asCatherine ascends to heaven.

From a simple hymn-like opening, the piece builds relentlessly to an intense and inspiring finale. James L. Hosay is one of the modern concert band's literature's great composers of melody. So often modern band pieces are built upon a couple of simple ostinato figures at the expense of any real extended thematic material. Itis indeed refreshing and rewarding to have a beautiful melody to play. Play it!
