For countless years the legendary Kitty O'Shea's, a bar at the Hilton & Towers Hotel in Chicago, has been the favourite meeting place for participants of the annual Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic. It was at this bar that Johan de Meij met Max McKee, from whom he eventually received a commission to write a work based on the folk music of McKee's Irish forefathers. De Meij immersed himself in the project and received unexpected help when, while purchasing an espresso machine from a neighbour, discovered the owner was Bill Whelan, composer of Riverdance. Wearing his Harold Bennett hat, Henry Fillmore turned out some especially delightful marches. At Sight is a particularly breezy example of the Bennett style, and Larry Clark's respectful and adroit young band arrangement is a real winner. The lighthearted and tuneful character of this little gem is a wonderful way to teach young musicians the joys of the March style and form.

At the Break of Gondwana - Benjamin Yeo

This marvellous work by the Singaporean composer Benjamin Yeo outlines a number of beautiful impressions of the magnificent fauna and flora of Gondwana (or Gondwanaland). Some unusual sounds of nature announce a dazzling allegro with lots ofpercussion and swift time changes. A lovely romantic melody reflects the silence of nature. At the end of the work, the initial theme reappears, this time in a grand, monumental instrumentation.
