Bringing to mind the scenic majesty of the northern forests, Michael's fresh-sounding overture for young players opens with a powerful fanfare before introducing the energetic main theme in 5/4. Carefully using repetitive patternscombined with a unique harmonic treatment and brief lyric section, this work provides musical depth in a framework that is easy to teach. (Grade 2.5) Dur: 4:00

Northpointe Fantasy - James Swearingen

Begins with a short, legato introduction before moving to an opening section with a bold, memorable first theme in the trumpets which is continued by the upper woodwinds. The low brass which had been providing a solid rhythm accompaniment then get the lyrical second theme. Following a nicely contrasting center section in 3/4 which begins with a flute section soli the work recapitulates to the powerful opening theme, and dramatic ending.

A brilliant contemporary composition combining both rhythmic drive and melodic flow. The slower middle section contrasts two outer fast sections with a lyric melody alternating between choirs of instruments. A sure contest winner!

Northridge Vista - David Gorham

The Van Buren High School Bands (Arkansas) commissioned this piece in honor of their long time band director upon his retirement. The lively and melodic quality of the opening reflects his spirit and the constant energy he applied to his teaching on a daily basis. A quiet and serene middle section provides a lyric, serene contrast, as if pausing for a moment of reflection before the opening material appears again for an uplifting and celebratory finale.
