Remembrance Day - Jacob de Haan

Remembrance Day (Totengedenken) is a chorale-like piece in memory of those who have died in service. Jacob de Haan composed this work for a concert by the symphonic wind orchestra Symphonic Winds, which he conducted in Germany on Volkstrauertag (national remembrance day). The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages, and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. Choir parts are also available to complement the performance.

Reminiscence - Kathryn Salfelder

Composed for the commission project celebrating the 85th birthday of legendary conductor Frank Battisti, this beautiful lyric piece from Kathryn Salfelder offers a rewarding emotional depth for young bands. Evoking feelings of nostalgia, yearning and growth, some of the moments are peaceful while others are full of angst. The music evolves from a tone row provided by Mr. Battisti himself and features shifting tonal textures, ranging from lush full band passages to lighter soloistic passages.

"The past is never dead. It's not even past." - William Faulkner To the conductor: Slurs in accompanying voices can be seen as indicating the phrasing only, thus breathing is possibe when necessary. It will be the challenge of the conductor to shape this as soft and sostenuto as possible (almost like strings), if needed assign appropriate places to breathe, depending on size and level of the band. Reminiscencia Gitana - André Waignein

Reminiscencia Gitana was originally a piano piece. Andr Waignein wrote the piece for the Spanish pianist Blanca Quevedo, a student of his at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels. This work has all the elements that make a composition interesting: melody, virtuosity and most importantly the 'Gitana' (gypsy) character. Each section follows on without interruption making a contrasting whole that will captivate both players and audience until the last note.
