Power Play - Robert E. Foster Jr.

Power Play was commissioned by band director Robert Ball and the Mill Creek Middle School Band, Shawnee, Kansas. This exciting addition to young band repertoire was written to deliver an energetic element to concert programs. Pushing the tempo will help players develop their technique and, along with exaggerating the accents, will contribute to the driving force of the piece. While the overall effect sounds difficult, it is very playable by middle or high school bands and will be a reliable power source for your next performance.

The composer has dedicated this piece to hischildren. From a parent's point of view, childhoodpasses by too quickly. However, at other times thedays seem endless - particularly those days whenchildren keep their parents so busy and pushed tothe limit that they don't know if they're coming orgoing. Scraped knees, crayoned walls and ravagedplayrooms are the ingredients for a battle of wills -a real "power play." However, one enchantingsmile from a child is enough to make the hardwork worth it. This piece was written in the middleof teddy bears, toy cars and Lego bricks.

Powhatan Rhapsody - John Hosay

Powhatan County, Virginia was named after the great Native-American Chief Powhatan, whose confederacy of tribes once dominated the costal Virginia plain. He is most remembered for being the father of Pocahontas. His people are best known as the Native Americans who helped the Jamestown colonists survive. Several of these original tribes still exist today. The composer was inspired by the essence of this region and the James River which borders the northern portion of the county.
