Soaring

Soaring is an exciting composition for solo trumpet and concert band. The music is celebratory in nature and features the dynamic and rhythmic range of the trumpet. The piece opens with an American rhythmic gesture reminiscent of Aaron Copland and John Williams. The trumpet answers this gesture with a bold cadenza that will transform into the main melody a little later on in the piece. If you have a good trumpet player, this would be a great choice to feature them or it can be used with a feature soloist from elsewhere. Just gorgeous.

Softly Speaks the Night

Song for Terra

Representing the hope that we can all live with peaceful thoughts, this expressive ballad lets younger ensembles work on the essential skills of legato-style playing, listening across the ensemble, and developing long phrases. Only two and a half minutes long, this composition will present a beautiful musical moment in your concert without tiring younger performers.

Song of India - Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

This sultry classical favorite from Rimsky-Korsakov is faithfully arranged for young bands by Andrew Balent. Andy has a knack for retaining the essence of standard classical repertoire, while toning the technical difficulties down to the students' ability levels. Paying close attention to dynamic changes and ensemble balance will make this a winner in contest and festival settings.

Soul Rock - Dale Lauder

This is a John Kenyon classic. It is a 1950's rock style song. There are alternate clarinet parts so students who can play above the break, have that option. If your clarinets are not ready for that register, hand out the low parts. It works! The 1st trumpet's highest note is C.

Sound Off

This early Sousa march, Sound Off, arranged by Andrew Balent, excellently showcases his gift for composing compelling melodies and counter melodies. The piece features his signature style, but still remains distinct and unique compared to his more well-known marches.

Sound Trip - Steven Rosenhaus

This is an easy song for your beginning band and a great tool for teacher cut-time. Start out conducting in four, then without saying a word, conduct in two when the students have the song down. Once they play it, they will be able to feel the cut time rather than trying to explain it first.1st trumpet's highest note is C. Clarinets do not cross the break

Soundscape - Bill Calhoun

"Simple", "effective" and "elegant" are adjectives that best describe this new piece from composer Bill Calhoun. Very young players can work on tone and long lines with this beautiful piece. Fresh harmonic movement, along with pleasant melodies make this a good choice to teach musical concepts to the youngest of students.

Space Station One

Written to honor the courage of the men and women who venture into space, this work helps reinforce young brass players' embouchures and pitch recognition while also developing beginning essential fingerings for woodwind players. A great concert or contest opener that will show off new players developing skills while also giving every section a chance to shine.
