Grant Michel encourages young bands to explore their musical range, from the mysterious to the intimidating, in this fresh contemporary piece.

Pulse Pounding

As the title describes, this piece gets the pulse pounding! It contains driving rhythms, simple syncopated melodies, and angular harmonies. It has all of the ingredients that have made Sean O'Loughlin's pieces so popular in the Carl Fischer Concert Band catalog. It will certainly raise the heart rate of your students and audiences alike!

Qin Shi's Stone Army

The Terracotta army that guards the tomb of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang is nearly 8,000 warriors strong. This new piece for beginning ensembles is set to depict these magnificent stone soldiers. New composer Tyler Arcari draws on his background in music education to bring us a stunning new piece that young band students will love to play. It will sound rich and full, even with less experienced players. In addition to the wonderful music in this piece, there are great opportunities for cross-curricular learning with this contest worthy piece.

Qu Verdes Son

Beginning with simmering Latin percussion this energetic, rhythmic arrangement of O Tannenbaum, explores the beauty and meaning of one of the holiday's most beloved symbols: the Christmas tree. Qu Verdes Son, the Spanish-language version, celebrates the tree's beautiful lights, fresh aroma, and especially, its lovely color. Playable by beginning students who only know the first 6 notes of the Bb scale, this will be an audience and student favorite!

Quest for the Throne

Quest for the Throne evokes images of kings and castles, knights and horses, and dragons in all their glory. Itis a bold and aggressive piece throughout, but includes a contrasting, lush secondary theme for variety. In his typical style, Clark uses forceful figures and strong melodic content to give students music they will want to practice and play again and again.

Quiet Pride

Written in honor of beloved directors, this piece is inspired by the qualities they instilled in students: "Loyalty, Dignity, Hard Work, a Strong Competitive Spirit, and a Sense of Quiet Pride." This piece opens with timpani and baritone solos, building to melodies and countermelodies that rise and fall with emotion through rubato tempos, ritardandos, accelerandos, and dynamic phrasing.

Quintessence

Composer Joseph Compello draws on his many years of experience teaching beginners to give us an exciting new contest-style piece for very young groups. Quintessence consists of simple rhythms and notes, but is also quite musical, with an aggressive, driving feeling. It's a great way introduce two eighth notes that are repeated. Your first year group will sound more advanced than their years.
