Molly Pitcher

This piece is part of The American Legends series and tells the story of Molly Pitcher, a woman who took over her husband's cannon crew duties during the American Revolution after he was injured in battle. The music includes themes representing both the British and Continental forces, with a dramatic shift as Molly steps in to continue the fight, culminating in a powerful conclusion. Performance suggestions include using traditional snare drums and cannon sound effects.

This impressionistic composition about these vanished structures, although written for more advanced ensembles, has only one flute, clarinet, trumpet, horn and trombone part. As a result, smaller bands can play this composition without having to look for a flex-band arrangement. Use this to develop the essential skills of syncopation and counting while also offering the security of only having one part for each instrument voice. An exciting contrasting selection for bands looking for a harmonically interesting composition, this also works well as a contest selection.

Morning In Madrid - Bill Calhoun

Spanish-style rhythms, melodies and harmonies abound in this lovely new concert work from composer Bill Calhoun. From the opening "bird-like" calls from the woodwinds accompanied by the ascending chords in the clarinets and the brass, one can picture the sun rising above the horizon at the start of a Morning in Madrid. This piece will help you teach your students about lyrical expression while playing.

Often hgh school bands do not get the opportunity to perform music by this important composer sue to their length and difficulty, but this piece is well within the reach of many high school groups. Written to portray the mountains along the North and South Carolina border, this lighter allegro overture is written in ABA form. With many dynamic contrasts, articulations, and short solo opportunities, this piece teaches many essential musical concepts. The legato middle section lets the ensemble focus on tone quality and phrasing. A return to the opening section's style ends this composition in an exciting manner. A great choice for concert or contest.
