Temple of Darkness was conceived as a concert piece to be performed within the first year of beginning instruction. Every effort has been made to give young players the experieince of performing a mature-sounding composition with little technical demand. Only the first notes learned in most beginning method books are utilized in this composition. Rhythms are the whole note, half note, quarter note, and eighth note. Percussion plays a vital musical role without placing too many demands on the developing percussionist.

An Irish Tale
Based on the folk song While History's Muse (subtitled Air: Paddy Whack), this delightful arrangement in 3/4 has all the characteristics of a lighthearted Irish dance. A tambourine and clarinet drone set the stage for the flute melody that is eventually passed throughout the ensemble. A key change to E= builds until the piece returns to the lighthearted style of the opening one last time. Great writing for young bands! (1:55)

Kilauea - Brian Balmages
Simple aleatoric passages help recreate the effect of an erupting volcano in this powerful yet extremely playable composition. Using bass drum to suggest the groaning of the volcano, the lyrical opening foreshadows the wildness of the eruption, and in transition, students play any notes and rhythms desired. As the lava begins to flow, a cacophonous ostinato appears over a menacing theme in the trumpets and low voices. In addition to the regular part, an optional advanced snare drum part is included for accomplished percussionists. This fanfare captures the spirit of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The Games began in 776 B.C. in honor of Zeus. Since then, they have become the central location for heroes and champions to compete for the highest honors in the world. This work also serves as a reminder that heroes are all around us - in teachers who stay after school to help students, in parents who strive to give their children the best possible lives, and most of all in students themselves, the young champions of our world who see nothing between them and their dreams. The mallet part calls for multiple sets of bells (or other metallic instruments such as the vibraphone). Certainly,two to three players can really make this an effective part. There are two Percussion 1 parts included: a normal part and an advanced part. The level of the snare drummer will determine which part should be used. However, both parts may be used simultaneously if percussionists are available.
