Along the Western Trail
From radio to motion pictures to television, all have glamorized what we know as "The Wild West," but the folk songs from that era have lived on in an unaltered state. They tell stories of the lives, loves, and losses of the brave souls who ventured into a then uncharted landscape. Here is a musical salute to that time and its people, featuring SWEET BETSY FROM PIKE, THE STREETS OF LAREDO, THE LONE PRAIRIE, and LITTLE BROWN JUG. Head 'em up and move 'em out! (2:04)

Wassail, Wassail All Over the Town
Wassailing songs are among the most popular of the secular holiday songs of Christmas. The tradition of "wassailing" refers to townsfolk going door to door, singing and drinking to the health of those whom they visit. This is basically what we know as "caroling." This popular British Christmas carol has been cleverly arranged to give all members of the ensemble interesting melodic parts. Rests are a must on a Christmas concert and this has been taken into account, giving chop breaks as needed. (3:20)

By Lantern's Light
This medley of traditional folk songs songs uses Clair Fairchild's "Twelve Persian Folk Songs" as its basis. Fairchild took care to preserve their original authenticity by limiting all western harmony and as a result, performers will be required to replicate the songlike phrasing of the lines, rhythmic integrity and the style of the accompaniment. Essential to performance of this composition is helping performers understand that many inflections exist beyond what is written on the page. Musical challenges abound in this well-crafted folk song based composition.

Hope Remains Within - Zachary Cairns
Pandora opens a jar (in seemingly more accurate translations) and releases numerous evils, diseases and other pains into the world, but one thing remains within the jar: hope. Why does hope remain within? Why doesn't it come out and help humanity? Why was it included with all those evils in the first place? Zachary Cairns wrote this piece to engage these unanswered questions. This dramatic concert selection encourages students and listeners to consider their own ideas of what hope is.
